Currently, Intel’s LGA-1200, a new mainstream socket, is on the launch pad. However, we are learning that this platform could have an extremely short lifespan. In one year, the platform could see two generations of CPUs following one another, which is extremely fast. Indeed, in 2021, Alder Lake could well arrive with its new LGA-1700!

According to what is said, this new LGA-1200 would have a very, very short life span of about a year. According to the source, Lit-tech, a Taiwanese company that provides VRTT tools for the Asia-Pacific sector, Comet Lake-S would soon be replaced by Rocket Lake-S. According to the extremely tight timelines, Rocket Lake-S could be here by the end of the year. Thereafter, Intel would follow with a new generation of CPU in 2021 (or even early 2022) which will require a new socket.
The new socket in question is the LGA-1700 which has different dimensions from the current LGA-115x and LGA-1200. While the current sockets measure 37.5 x 37.5 mm, it is rumoured that the LGA-1700 is 45 x 37.5 mm. If you are lucky, the cooling manufacturers will provide you with a mounting kit for your heatsink. If not, you’ll have to change it.

On the other hand, we should not see the downside of the thing. Obviously, these 500 extra pins will allow Intel to increase the number of PCIe lines available. Idem, this would increase the number of CPU cores to 16 in quite particular configurations. But that’s back to that. Finally, we hear whispered in the earpiece that this platform would have a longer lifespan than the current LGA-115x/1200. The LGA-1700 could accommodate three generations of CPUs… Provided that Intel does not make arbitrary limitations as was the case with the LGA-1151 of the 6th and 7th generations and the LGA-1151 of the 8th and 9th generations.
So we ask ourselves, is it smart to invest now in a 400 series card knowing that all this will be obsolete next year (if the calendar holds)? Anyway, let’s stay alert and take all this with a grain of salt. On the other hand, it seems that if you want a sustainable platform, the best thing to do is to invest some money in AMD.
