Amazon’s Echo voice calling now rolling out in UK and Germany

Amazon’s voice calling feature is finally spreading their wings a bit more internationally, with the messaging feature now available in UK and Germany.

The feature, which allows users to make voice and video calls from compatible Amazon Echo devices was previously only available in USA. Users will be able to call from Echo to Echo, but also crucially to other users of the Amazon Alexa app, meaning the feature is not tied to the small installed base of Echo owners only.

The feature is enabled via an update to the Amazon Alexa app, and requires SMS verification, which may present a hurdle for those who want to use it more globally, but this is not likely a very big issue for those determined to hack the system.

Amazon has recently revealed a raft of new Echo products, including a cheaper video calling device, the Echo Spot, which is likely to be very popular with scattered families this holiday season. The company is also partnering with Microsoft to host its Cortana voice assistant on their service.

Amazon’s full range of products, including pre-order links, can be seen here in USA and here in Uthe UK.

Will any of our readers be picking up a Spot this holiday season? Let us know below.
