While AMD processors have been a competitive choice on a multitude of modern laptops in recent years, AMD graphics chips have failed to win quality designs so far. That, however, might change with the release of the AMD Radeon RX 6000 Mobile series of GPUs, based on the AMD RDNA2 architecture, with powerful compute units, variable-rate shading, RT acceleration, and AMD Infinity Cache.
In all fairness, AMD mobile graphics have not been competitive alternatives to the Nvidia options for many years now, but with RDNA2 that promises a 50% increase in performance and 40% reduction in power use, AMD laptop GPUs might have a chance from now on. AMD announced three different GPU series as part of this lineup:
- Radeon RX 6800M – designed for 1440p gaming, with a design power of 145+ W, meant for full-size performance notebooks;
- Radeon RX 6700M – designed for 1440p and 1080 gaming, with a design power of up to 135W, a more affordable mid-range chip;
- Radeon RX 6600M – designed for 1080p gaming, with a design power of up to 100W and meant for ultraportable designs.
We’ll have a quick look at these chips down below and explain what they’re meant for, and then in the second part of the article, we’ll go through all the available/announced laptops to feature this sort of 2021 AMD graphics.
The majority of these products pair an AMD Ryzen processor with Radeon graphics, which also enables the AMD Advantage framework of software and hardware technologies meant to amplify your performance and everyday experience, such as SAM – Smart Acces Memory or SmartShift or Radeon Boost/Chill or FreeSync, among others. Of course, you should always look past the marketing and check out detailed reviews in order to decide on the best product for your needs and within your budget.
Nonetheless, I expect that laptops based on RX 6000 AMD graphics to be options worth at least considering with this generation, unlike in the past. They should also have a price advantage over their Nvidia-based piers, from what we know so far, and AMD promises there won’t be major compromises with these products, which will benefit from modern designs, good quality screens (144+ Hz, low latency, 300+ nits, and at least 100% sRGB), fast storage and long battery life, alongside the performance you’d expect from a 2021 gaming device.
Ok, so here’s a quick summary of these Radeon RX 6000 options.

It’s difficult to properly judge the performance of these chips at this point, especially since the TGPs might vary between the different implementations. We do have some gaming results for you down below, based on the data presented by AMD, and we’ve also covered the 6800M powered ROG Strix G15 Advantage in this separate article, which includes some benchmarks and gaming results.
For the most part, though, expect the 6800M to deliver 60+ fps at QHD resolution with maximum settings, and trade blows in performance with high-powered RTX 3070s and mid-powered 3080s. That aside, AMD advertises the 6700M at 100+ fps at QHD resolution with High Settings, and the 6600M at 60+ fps at FHD resolution and Max Settings. This latter chip should be a match for the RTX 3060 chips out there, and we can only hope that at a similar power package (since the AMD slides do not mention this important detail). There’s very little about Ray Tracing performance in these launch slides, and that could suggest that Nvidia still has an edge in RT, if that’s something that matters to you.
Nonetheless, take all these suppositions and numbers with a grain of salt and look for our future reviews for a more in-depth analysis of these AMD Radeon graphics platforms.
Radeon RX 6800M, 6700M and 6600M laptops
The reminding of this article lists the complete selection of laptops built on RX 6800M, 6700M, and 6600M hardware. Since we only have limited details at the time of this article, we’ve clumped up all the options in a single table, but we might split that into several sections as we fill up the blanks and more products are announced (MSI and Lenovo products also rumored, to be added soon), most likely into portable and full-size designs.
