After almost an entire year of wait, speculation, leaks, and rumours, the new Battlefield was finally revealed today. As previously predicted, it is going to be called Battlefield 2042 and will be a cross-gen title, with additional benefits beyond higher resolutions/frame rates for players on newer consoles.
More than 600,000 people waited with bated breath for an entire hour while the countdown to the reveal ticked down to zero, and they got redirected to the official reveal. Faint military noises could be heard in the background of the countdown.
Fans got treated to an incredible war montage, with incredible game engine footage of War-planes, Wing Suits, and Tanks, showcasing what the engine created by developers DICE has to offer.
It is set to be an all multiplayer experience, with the new-gen consoles (PS5/Xbox Series) promising 128-player skirmishes, and last-gen consoles capping out at 64 players. The next-gen version of the game will also include larger map sizes, and the $10 increase in price is supposed to reflect the new changes.
All signs point towards the story of Battlefield 2042 being extremely grim, with the world being on the verge of collapse and superpowers fighting to extinguish each other out, using everything they can. It should be noted however that the game will not include a campaign, instead opting to go completely multiplayer, similar to its competitor Call of Duty Black Ops 4 years prior.
The game will let players choose to play as a new player class called Specialists, who along with fully customized loadouts, will also have access to “a cutting-edge arsenal of weapons, equipment, and vehicles to use in battle”.
Battlefield 2042 New Game Modes
Being a multiplayer-only title, Battlefield 2042 will include 3 modes, with only 2 of them being announced in the here and now. The third game mode will be revealed during EA Play set for June 22. Here’s a look at what the 2 modes will offer:
- All-Out Warfare – Experience the intensity of All-Out Warfare in large-scale battles like never before on maps filled with dynamic weather, dangerous environmental hazards, and spectacular world events that see tornadoes rip across the map and sandstorms block out the sun.
- Hazard Zone – An all-new, high-stakes, squad-based game-type for the Battlefield franchise that is a modern take on the multiplayer experience that is distinctly DICE but very different from All-Out Warfare’s Conquest or Breakthrough modes.
Battlefield 2042 is set to be released for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC for $69.99. It is also set to be released in previous-gen consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One consoles for $59.99. The game will release on October 22, 2021. EA Play members will get access to a 10-hour trial from October 15, with players who pre-orders getting access to the open beta.
