Acer Swift Edge 16 (2023)

Best overall

Lightweight and fast with a stunning OLED display

The 2023 Acer Swift Edge comes with AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors and more powerful graphics, plus a new display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Pros

  • Fast AMD Ryzen 7 7040 processors
  • Stunning 120Hz OLED display
  • Extremely thin and light for its size

Cons

  • Lack of true 4K resolution

The Acer Swift Edge was already one of our favorite thin and lightweight laptops, and the 2023 model improves upon its predecessor’s design in almost every way except the display resolution.

Performance-wise, it’s packing an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor with 8 cores and 16 threads for excellent performance. This processor also includes Radeon 780M integrated graphics for solid performance in 3D workloads. Plus, 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to a 2TB SSD round out a top-tier set of specs.

The laptop has a 16-inch OLED panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz, making it incredibly smooth and vibrant. Above that display is a 1440p webcam, which is always great to see. However, the laptop has a 3200×2000 display resolution, which is lower than the 4K resolution offered by its predecessor, though still more than sharp enough for this size.

Despite the powerful processor and fantastic display, the Acer Swift Edge 16 is extremely light for a 16-inch laptop, coming in at a mere 2.7 pounds thanks to the magnesium alloy chassis. Even with this thin and lightweight design, you get a lot of ports, including two USB Type-C, two USB Type-A, an HDMI, and a headphone jack. This makes for a well-rounded setup, especially considering the device’s thinness. You should be able to use most of your peripherals with it without needing adapters, which is excellent. Acer really knocked it out of the park with the Swift Edge 16, and it’s one of the best laptops you can buy in general, but especially if you want an AMD Ryzen processor.

Alienware m16 (AMD)

Best gaming laptop

Extreme performance for demanding games

The Alienware m16 is a super-powerful gaming laptop packing AMD Ryzen 7045HX series processors and Nvidia GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs. It also has a large 16-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio, great for gaming and content creation.

Pros

  • Top-tier AMD Ryzen CPUs and Nvidia GeForce GPUs
  • Tall 16:10 display is great for gaming and content creation
  • Sleek Alienware design language

Cons

  • Very thick and heavy
  • Expensive

AMD processors have always been more popular in gaming laptops, and if that’s what you’re looking for, the Alienware m16 is the laptop for you. This is one of the fastest laptops on the market, starting with powerful AMD Ryzen 7045HX processors, up to a Ryzen 9 7945HX with 12 cores and 24 threads. If that’s not wild enough, the laptop also comes with up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 (a 4090 model will come later) GPU, and these two components can use up to 240W of power combined. Rounding things out, you can go up to 64GB of RAM and a massive 8.5TB of storage.

The 16-inch display comes in a 16:10 aspect ratio, making this a super laptop for gaming and productivity. The base model has Quad HD+ resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate, but you can upgrade to a 240Hz panel that also covers 100% of DCI-P3 for nicer colors overall. If you value frame rates more, there’s also a Full HD+ 480Hz panel for maximum smoothness in esports titles. Above the display is a 1080p webcam with optional Windows Hello support, depending on your chosen display.

The Alienware m16 features the company’s signature design language, with an all-black chassis and RGB lighting on the keyboard and around the exhaust vents on the back. Of course, given the powerful specs, it’s fairly thick and heavy, going up to 7.28 pounds depending on the specs you choose. As usual with gaming laptops, ports are plentiful, with two USB Type-C and two Type-A ports, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, RJ45 Ethernet (2.5Gbps), a headphone jack, and a full-size SD card reader.

You’ll have to pay a pretty penny for the privilege of owning the Alienware m16, but it’s a powerful laptop that won’t let you down if you want to run the latest games.

MSI Bravo 15 laptop
MSI Bravo 15

Best budget gaming laptop

Solid gaming performance at a lower price

$799 $1000 Save $201

Armed with Nvidia’s 40-series GPUs and AMD’s Ryzen 7035 processors, the MSI Bravo 15 is a fantastic lineup of gaming laptops that’s also light on your wallet.

Pros

  • Fast AMD 7035 processors and Nvidia 40 series GPUs
  • Smoother 144Hz refresh rate
  • Inexpensive for a gaming laptop

AMD CPUs are known to deliver powerful performance at a low price, and AMD’s Ryzen 7000 laptop processors are no exception. So, if you’re looking for a cheap laptop that can play the latest games at high frame rates, look no further than the MSI Bravo 15, powered by these heavy-hitting CPUs.

From its specifications alone, it’s clear that the MSI Bravo 15 is no slouch. The base model comes with a Ryzen 5 7535HS processor and is powered by Nvidia’s RTX 4050 GPU, all while costing $800. If you want more performance, you can go for the pricier variant with a Ryzen 7 7735HS CPU and an RTX 4060. Both MSI Bravo 15 models have a 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD and offer a buttery smooth FHD 144Hz display for all your high-speed gaming needs. Factor in the blazing-fast 8GB DDR5 4800MHz memory, and these laptops can handle most modern games with ease.

One downside of this laptop is its bulky design. It weighs almost 5 pounds and has a 24.8-millimeter thickness, meaning it’s not the most portable gaming laptop on the market. As for the ports, the MSI Bravo 15 houses all essential connections, including a USB Type-C connector, three USB Type-A ports, and one HDMI connector. It even comes with a headphone/microphone combo jack.

Unlike most gaming laptops, the MSI Bravo doesn’t feature flashy aesthetics. Instead, the laptop sports a more professional look, making it great for users who want a sleek and powerful laptop for everyday work. While the MSI Bravo 15 may not be the very best laptop if you’re a heavy gamer, it’s a solid choice for a budget gaming device.

Lenovo Yoga 6 Gen 8

Best budget convertible

Great performance for a lower price

$500 $700 Save $200

The Lenovo Yoga 6 Gen 8 is an excellent budget Windows convertible, with AMD Ryzen 7030 series CPUs offering great performance. It has a sleek design with an optional fabric cover, a 16:10 display, and a 1080p webcam, all for a low price.

Pros

  • Solid performance with AMD Ryzen 7030 series processors
  • Unique design, especially in the fabric-covered model
  • Solid display and webcam for the price

Cons

  • Pen is sold separately and there’s no storage for it
  • The price difference to the Yoga 7 is relatively small

If you want the versatility of a convertible without breaking the bank, the Lenovo Yoga 6 is probably your best option. We’ve reviewed the previous iteration and loved it, and the 2023 model delivers some welcome performance improvements.

Those performance improvements come in the form of AMD Ryzen 7030 series processors, up to a Ryzen 7 7730U with 8 cores and 16 threads. It seems like a minor upgrade at first, but these processors are more efficient and faster than the previous 2022 and 2021 models. This will be more than fast enough for the majority of users. Plus, you can configure it with up to 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD.

The display hasn’t changed in the 2023 model, but it’s still great. It’s a 13.3-inch panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and it has Full HD+ resolution, and that’s all you can ask for at this price. It also supports touch and pen input since it’s a convertible. The webcam above that display is also a 1080p webcam with Windows Hello support, a feature that’s always nice to see in this price range.

Similarly, the design is unchanged with this model, so we have a mix of plastic and metal, with an optional fabric cover top on some models. That fabric model is the most unique of the bunch, and it really stands out in a sea of metal and plastic laptops. It’s not overly heavy, either, coming in at 3.02 pounds. The selection of ports includes two USB Type-C and two Type-A ports, HDMI, a headphone jack, and a microSD card reader, so we have a good setup here.

All in all, the Lenovo Yoga 6 is certainly one of the best laptops you can find with an AMD Ryzen processor. It’s not aimed at the high-end of the market, but it’s fantastic for just about everyone else.

Lenovo Yoga 7 14-inch 2023
Lenovo Yoga 7 (16-inch, 2023)

Best convertible

A versatile form factor with high-performance specs

The 2023 Lenovo Yoga 7 is a powerful convertible laptop with AMD Ryzen 7035 series processors, delivering strong performance in a versatile form factor. The 16-inch display comes in Full HD+ resolution, perfect for getting work done.

Pros

  • AMD Ryzen 7035 processors deliver strong performance
  • Large 16-inch display is great for multi-tasking
  • Plenty of ports

Cons

  • The display isn’t very vibrant
  • Somewhat heavy

If you want a laptop that’s just a bit more versatile, the Lenovo Yoga 7 is a fantastic convertible laptop with high-end AMD Ryzen processors and a big canvas to work on.

Starting with performance, the Lenovo Yoga 7 (2023) is powered by AMD Ryzen 7035U series processors, delivering strong performance with up to 8 cores and 16 threads, plus Radeon 680M integrated graphics. With this GPU, it’s actually possible to play a lot of games as long as you can tweak some settings. It can also be configured with up to 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD for a great experience all around.

The display isn’t as impressive as the Acer Swift Edge, but it’s still a large 16-inch panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio, so it’s great for productivity. It comes in Full HD+ resolution, though you may find it disappointing that it only covers 45% of NTSC, so colors won’t be super vibrant. Being a convertible means the screen supports touch and pen input, too. Above the display is a 1080p webcam with Windows Hello support, which is always nice to see.

In terms of design, the Lenovo Yoga 7 looks nice with its curved edges, especially in the Tidal Teal colorway, but the Storm Grey model is more widely available and a bit more boring. At 4.49 pounds, it’s a bit on the heavier side, though it makes sense for an aluminum laptop. You do get a ton of ports, though, including two USB Type-C and two Type-A ports, HDMI, a headphone jack, and a microSD card reader. Unfortunately, the USB Type-C ports don’t support USB4.

It’s not quite as premium as some Intel-powered convertibles, but the Lenovo Yoga 7 is a great machine at a very reasonable price for what it offers.

Front view of the HP Pavilion Aero 13 2023 laptop
HP Pavilion Aero 13 (2023)

Best affordable lightweight laptop

Light, fast, and relatively cheap

$630 $880 Save $250

The HP Pavilion Aero is a very lightweight laptop, weighing under 2,2 pounds, yet it’s surprisingly affordable with great specs. Powered by AMD Ryzen 7035 series processors, it’s very fast, and it even includes integrated Radeon 680M Graphics.

Pros

  • AMD Ryzen 7035 processors with powerful integrated graphics
  • Extremely lightweight at under 2.2 pounds
  • Tall 16:10 display with Quad HD+ option

Cons

  • Prices have been increasing with recent models
  • Still a 720p webcam without facial recognition

Looking for an exceptionally light laptop that you can easily take anywhere? Look no further than the HP Pavilion Aero, which has been refreshed for 2023 with souped-up performance.

The latest model is packing AMD Ryzen 7035 series processors, which not only include up to 8 cores and 16 threads but also upgrade the integrated GPU with RDNA2-based graphics. The AMD Radeon 680M is especially capable, and it can run a lot of modern games with some settings tweaked. You also get up to 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, but the base model is much cheaper and already offers a great experience.

HP hasn’t made changes to the display since it introduced the Pavilion Aero in 2021, but this 13.3-inch panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution still offers a great experience. Even better, you can upgrade to a Quad HD+ panel for an even better experience, something very rare in this price range. Unfortunately, the webcam hasn’t changed either, and the 720p camera feels a little stale now. Windows Hello support is available through a fingerprint reader, but not the camera.

Cheap laptops tend to be heavier, but HP somehow made the Pavilion Aero weigh under 2.2 pounds — or one kilogram — while also being very affordable. What’s more, it comes in four color options, which means you can express yourself a little more by choosing a color that suits you. As for ports, there’s a USB Type-C and two Type-A ports, HDMI, and a headphone jack. It’s a relatively basic setup, but it does cover most needs you might have.

The HP Pavilion Aero is frankly a surprisingly good laptop in almost all respects, and it’s hard to fault it considering its price point. Even though that price has been rising for the past couple of years.

Angled rear view of the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 facing left
Lenovo ThinkPad Z13

Best business laptop

Top-tier performance and a sleek professional design

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 is one of the most unique ThinkPads ever, with a sleek new design that looks fantastic. It comes with AMD Ryzen 6000 series processors, and it’s one of the few AMD laptops to support USB4. In addition, it comes with a solid display.

Pros

  • AMD Ryzen PRO 6000 series processors with great performance
  • Sleek and modern design for a ThinkPad
  • One of the few AMD laptops with USB4 support

Cons

  • A newer model is on the way
  • Not many ports aside from USB Type-C

Lenovo ThinkPads are incredibly popular business laptops, but not many have AMD processors. The ThinkPad Z13, however, is a phenomenal example of one.

Powering the Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 are AMD Ryzen 6000 series processors, up to a customized Ryzen 7 6860Z processor with 8 cores and 16 threads. These processors deliver fantastic performance, and they feature integrated Radeon 680M graphics, which deliver strong GPU performance for basic tasks. You can also configure it with up to 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 has a 13.3-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, but it gives you a couple of configuration options. The base model comes in Full HD+ resolution (1920 x 1200) with optional touch support, but you can upgrade to a 2.8K (2880 x 1800) OLED panel. This panel is sharper and has much more vibrant colors thanks to OLED technology. Lenovo has also equipped this laptop with a 1080p webcam with an f/2.0 aperture for solid image quality, and it supports Windows Hello facial recognition.

The ThinkPad Z13 is a major design shift for the ThinkPad lineup, featuring a sleek design, especially in the dual-tone colorway featuring black with bronze accents. It still has ThinkPad elements you know and love, like the red TrackPoint, but it looks much more modern. It’s decently light, too, at 2.78 pounds. There aren’t a ton of ports, with only two USB Type-C connections (and a headphone jack), but these both support USB4 40Gbps, which is rare for AMD laptops.

This is simply the best business laptop with AMD Ryzen processors and one of the best AMD laptops overall. Like most business laptops, it’s a bit pricey but a fantastic machine.

msi-modern-15
MSI Modern 15

Best budget

Solid specs at an affordable price

The MSI Modern 15 is a great budget laptop that’s powered by AMD’s Ryzen 7030 U-series processors and featuring a large 15-inch Full HD display. Measuring 19.8 millimeters in thickness, it’s also relatively portable.

Pros

  • AMD’s Ryzen 7030U processors offer solid performance
  • Fast 1TB SSD
  • Plenty of ports

Cons

  • 720p webcam
  • Doesn’t support DDR5 memory

If the rest of the laptops on this list seem a bit pricey, then you should consider checking out the MSI Modern 15. Its base model comes with the 6-core AMD Ryzen 7530U processor that has base and turbo clock speeds of 2.00GHz and 4.50GHz, respectively. If that sounds underwhelming, you can go for the slightly pricier variant, which offers the better-performing Ryzen 7730U CPU. While the lack of support for DDR5 memory can be seen as a drawback, the laptop’s 16GB DDR4 RAM works well for day-to-day tasks, and its 1920×1080 display resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio are good enough for the price. You’re also covered on the storage front as the laptop includes a fast 1TB NVMe SSD that you won’t need to upgrade for a long time.

Weighing around 3.85 pounds, the MSI Modern 15 certainly isn’t as light as the HP Pavilion Aero 13 (2023), but it’s not as heavy as a typical budget laptop. As for the ports, the laptop has one HDMI slot, a headphone jack, one USB Type-C connection, and three USB Type-A ports.

Its webcam, however, isn’t particularly great. The 720p sensor on the webcam can cause poor video quality, so you’re better off spending some cash on a dedicated webcam instead of using the laptop’s built-in camera. But considering that the MSI Modern 15 starts at $700, it’s hard not to recommend this budget-friendly laptop.

Best AMD Ryzen laptops in 2023: The bottom line

That’s it for this list! You really can’t go wrong with any of these laptops, but if we had to pick the best one from the bunch, it’d certainly be the Acer Swift Edge 16. It is extremely light, yet it has a large and sharp 4K display with stunning OLED technology. The high-performance processor on the Acer Swift Edge 16 is just the icing on the cake. You can’t ask for much more here, even if the processor inside isn’t the newest around anymore.

Front view of the Acer Swift Edge 16 (2023)
Acer Swift Edge 16 (2023)

Best overall

Lightweight and fast with a stunning OLED display

The 2023 Acer Swift Edge comes with AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors and more powerful graphics, plus a new display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

If you want a laptop that’s geared specifically towards gaming, then the Alienware m16 is the one for you. While it may be quite expensive, this powerful laptop can easily handle any modern triple-A game you throw at it, and its high refresh rate display further enhances your gaming experience.

Alternatively, you should go for the MSI Modern 15 (2023) if you don’t want to spend a fortune on a laptop. Despite its 720p camera and lack of support for DDR5 memory, it offers solid performance for a budget laptop and can last you quite a while if you plan to use it for everyday tasks.
