NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER & GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Review – Meet The Turing Refresh

p1010643-740x416-1-1987226

Last year, NVIDIA introduced their latest Turing based GeForce RTX 20 series graphics cards, which made a complete departure from traditional GPU design and created a hybrid GPU architecture that would include a range of new technologies to power the next-generation immersive gaming experiences

The GeForce RTX 20 series was the enablement of real-time raytracing which is the holy grail of graphics and something NVIDIA took 10 years to perfect. In addition to raytracing, NVIDIA also aimed to place bets on AI which would go on to play a key role in powering features such as DLSS or Deep Learning Super Sampling.

While the GeForce RTX 20 series was generally well received in the tech industry, the launch didn’t go without a few issues. The first and foremost problem with the new cards was the heavily taxing RTX features and a few key titles that supported it. Since the technology was new, it needed time to deliver results and it felt kind of rushed on NVIDIA’s part. The second was the pricing with each tier getting a bump in price over its predecessor.

geforce_super-2080s-5_1561506666-custom-1023x1030-5292652

But all of that changes today! In less than a year, NVIDIA is now bringing forth their new RTX SUPER lineup. Think of it as the original Turing lineup but supercharged with better performance & more sensible prices. The three cards that are being introduced today are the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER. These cards are what their predecessors should have been in the first place but also what prompted NVIDIA to launch SUPER now is AMD’s 7nm RDNA based RX 5700 series which is hitting the shelves this same week.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX SUPER Pricing Per Segment

When it comes to prices, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER is going to retail at $699 US, the RTX 2070 SUPER is going to retail at $499 US and the RTX 2060 SUPER is going to retail at $399 US. One would ask the question that if the prices are the same as they were before, what has changed?

Well, everything aside from the prices has been upgraded. When it comes to specifications, the RTX 2080 SUPER is going to offer 15% better performance than the Titan XP for $699 US. The RTX 2070 SUPER is said to offer 16% better performance than the RTX 2070 for $499US, putting it right under the current RTX 2080 and the RTX 2060 SUPER is said to be 15% faster than the RTX 2060 for $399 US which puts it at 1% slower than the existing RTX 2070 for a much lower price.

p1010680-1030x580-7779733

What happens to the existing cards? The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 and GeForce RTX 2070 are entirely replaced by their SUPER equivalents so NVIDIA and their AIBs would no longer be making more of those. There might be heavy promotions and discounts on the existing stock to clear up an inventory. As for the RTX 2060, it would exist because of the $349 US price point which makes it the perfect step up to RTX performance and feature set in this category. All cards below that fall in the GTX 16 series portfolio which offer the Turing architecture but exclude RTX features. Following is what the latest pricing chart for NVIDIA GeForce lineup looks like.

In addition to the specs/price update, NVIDIA’s RTX technologies are being widely adopted major game engines and APIs such as Microsft DirectX (DXR), Vulkan, Unreal Engine, Unity and Frostbite. While there were only three RTX titles around the launch of the RTX 20 series cards, NVIDIA claims that they have at least 13 new titles coming soon which would utilize their RTX feature set to offer real-time ray tracing. These titles include the hugely anticipated Cyberpunk 2077, DOOM Eternal, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Watch Dogs Legion, Wolfenstein Youngblood, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2. In addition to that, with the upcoming consoles confirmed to feature ray tracing, developers can also make use of the RTX technology to fine-tune future games for the GeForce RTX hardware.

So for this review, we will be taking a look at the reference NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER and GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Founders Edition graphics cards. Unlike last time, the Founders Edition has the same price as the reference variants so these models would indeed retail at $499 US and $399 US respectively (minus the FE Tax).

In case you want to read our full NVIDIA Turing GPU architecture and RTX/DLSS features deep dive, head over to this link.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX SUPER series is currently composed of three cards, the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER, and GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER. Nothing has changed in terms of architecture and the cards feature the same 12nm FinFET process node. Only the assigned GPU config has changed on all three cards along with a new shroud design. But before we get into the visual changes, let’s talk specs.

2019-07-01_18-51-04-1030x576-9275655

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER – Full TU104 GPU, 15.5 Gbps Memory

Based on the previous information and what we have seen so far, NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER would be using the TU104-450 GPU with 3072 CUDA cores, 8 GB of GDDR6 memory and would be clocked in at 15.5 Gbps along with a 256-bit bus interface. This would boost the total bandwidth to 496 GB/s which is just shy of that sweet 500 GB/s figures which could now easily be achieved with a slight overclock.

The core clocks would be maintained at 1650 MHz base and 1815 MHz boost. The card would have a TDP of 250W and would feature 8 Giga Rays/second worth of ray tracing horsepower. The card is expected to launch on the 23rd of July.

geforce_super-2080s-4_1561506665-custom-1030x687-9027553

In terms of performance, the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER is said to be around 10-15% faster on average than the Titan XP which makes it a lot faster than the GTX 1080 Ti, a card that the RTX 2080 was only able to match. The card is rated to deliver 11 TFLOPs of FP32 and 11 TFLOPs of INT32 Compute power and the tensor operations are rated at 89 TOPs which are clearly faster than RTX 2080s 10.1 TFLOPs FP32 and around 81 TOPs worth of horsepower.

It is still unclear about the wattage of this card but it is expected to hit the market later this month for $699 US. Those who have been saving up to buy a graphics card would find this a great high-end card compared to the original RTX 2080 or the Radeon VII.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER – The Navi Killer For $499 US

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER is the replacement for the RTX 2070 and while the RTX 2070 was not as popular as its predecessors, the GTX 1070 or the GTX 970, the RTX 2070 SUPER might actually change that. For $499 US, the existing RTX 2070 was clearly priced a bit too high. Even if it was faster than the RTX 1080 ($649 US), the price point was higher for the card to get attention from the mainstream audience who had previously seen the **70 tier cards under $400 US. The RTX 2070 SUPER doesn’t change the price point but it changes the specs and now it’s no longer faster than the GTX 1080, it’s faster than the GTX 1080 Ti and just around the same performance of a reference RTX 2080.

geforce_super-2070s-3_1561506575-custom-1030x687-6534731

In terms of specifications, the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER is everything that the rumors have told us. The GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER would be utilizing the Turing TU104-410 GPU with 2560 CUDA Cores, 184 TMUs, and 64 ROPs. It would also feature 320 Tensor Cores and 40 RT cores. The clock speeds would be maintained at 1605 MHz base and 1770 MHz boost with the TGP (Total Graphics Power) being set at 215W. The chip will be accompanied by 8 GB of GDDR6 memory operating at 14Gbps along with a 256-bit wide bus interface, delivering a total bandwidth of 448 GB/s.

When it comes to competition, the card would compete against AMD’s recently announced, 7nm RDNA based Radeon RX 5700 XT which does cost $50 US less but doesn’t have the RTX feature set that GeForce cards do support. In addition to that, while the Radeon RX 5700 XT was shown to be about 10% faster than the RTX 2070 on average, the RTX 2070 SUPER is about 16% faster average and up to 24% faster. It also has a maximum compute power of 9.1 TFLOPs FP32 / 9.1 TFLOPs INT 32 and 72 Tensor OPs. Another surprising fact about this card is that it has 10W lower power than the Radeon offering and the reference design offers two axial tech-based fans compared to just one on AMD’s reference design. So in an all reference battle, you know who the real winner would turn out to be.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER – More VRAM, More Cores, Higher Clocks For $399

Out of all the cards, the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER has received one of the major upgrades. The GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER would be utilizing the full Turing TU106-410 GPU die with 2176 CUDA Cores, 136 TMUs, and 64 ROPs. It would also feature 272 Tensor Cores and 32 RT cores. The clock speeds would be maintained at 1470 MHz base and 1650 MHz boost with the TGP (Total Graphics Power) being set at 175W. The chip will be accompanied with 8 GB of GDDR6 memory operating at 14Gbps along with a 256-bit wide bus interface, delivering a total bandwidth of 448 GB/s. The Vram would be the biggest upgrade over the 6 GB RTX 2060 which also featured a cut down 192-bit bus interface.

When it comes to performance, you are paying $100 US lower for the same performance as the GeForce RTX 2070. This places the card ideally against AMD’s Radeon RX 5700 (non-XT) which will be priced at $379 US. The GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER is 15% faster on average than the existing RTX 2060 in 1440p but we will find out in our own testing what the actual numbers are like.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX SUPER lineup would first be available in reference only models which are also known as Founders Edition. The custom models would hit the market on 9th July and will start at the suggested MSRPs listed above. These variants adopt NVIDIA’s reference cooler and PCB design which are set as the standard for AIB partners and their non-reference designs. This time, NVIDIA has taken a different approach with the Founders Edition cards and won’t be charging anything extra.

nvidia-geforce-20-series_official_geforce-rtx_founders-edition-1030x579-5734835

This time, NVIDIA also gives a fresh new design and the best PCB design to date. Gone is the blower fan cooler and now we get dual axial fans. Gone is the aggressive design from GeForce 10 series cards and instead, we get an elegant aluminum shroud that covers the entire frame around the PCB. And one more thing, Founders Edition cards come with a factory overclock so those non-reference cards we talked about a bit earlier, yeah, those would be lower clocked than NVIDIA’s reference FE cards.

Dual-Axial Fans For Double The Cooling Performance and Quiet Operation? I’ll Take it!

When it comes to the cooler design, NVIDIA is taking a major departure from their blower styled cooler from previous reference designs and going for a strong dual-axial fan cooling system which is said to deliver better cooling performance. The cooler comprises of dual fans that push cool air towards a large heatsink block that is made up of several aluminum fins and interconnects via heat pipe technology. NVIDIA is using a 3-phase monitor to limit vibrational noise, offering quieter GPU operation, even in intensive gaming loads.

nvidia-geforce-20-series_official_geforce-rtx_cooling-1030x579-3635793

The cooler has a high-performance vapor chamber underneath the hood which uses a copper base to effectively dissipate heat from the GPU and surroundings such as the VRAM. NVIDIA is stating that the cooler performs 10 degrees (Celcius) better than the previous founder edition cards while emitting 1/5th the noise.

NVIDIA RTX 20 Series Reference PCB – Overclockers Rejoice! You Can Actually Overclock This Bad Boy

NVIDIA states that the GeForce RTX 2080 Founder Edition makes use of 225W of power out of the box and up to 280W when pushed to the max by overclockers. Furthermore, the entire power delivery system has been rebuilt for GeForce RTX Founders Edition graphics cards, starting with the all-new 13-phase iMON DrMOS power supply. Of particular note, there is a new ability to switch off phases, for drastically-reduced power consumption at low workloads, which greatly increases power efficiency.

geforce-rtx-2080-technical-photography-pcb-front-001-custom-1-1030x469-1550987

Similarly, we’ve cranked up the number of capacitors on GeForce RTX graphics cards, enabling them to run at lower voltages by reducing voltage noise, or at high frequencies for improved performance.

Controlling all this is a new dynamic power management system, which adjusts power usage on a sub-millisecond basis, for a less variable current draw, which further improves efficiency and allows us to crank up the amount of power available for overclocking compared to previous-generation Pascal Founders Edition graphics cards. via NVIDIA

NVIDIA states that their new reference PCB allows for more power headroom of around 55W. That is where the 280W figure is coming from. The new electrical components also ensure much cleaner power delivery, allowing for better overclocks without wasting excess of power.

NVIDIA’s OC Scanner Utility Helps Push Massive Overclocks in Under 20 Minutes

While Manual overclocking is fully supported, NVIDIA has also provided its latest OC scanner application which reduces the time it takes for configuring your graphics card to hit the highest clock speeds. Traditionally, a user would increase the clock speeds gradually with different voltages applied and that could result in up to an hour worth of time when taking in factor the stability test process.

NVIDIA is streamlining the process by offering a simple one-click overclocking utility that runs on the NV Scanner API and features a sophisticated Test algorithm that is designed to test various workloads during overclocking. It not only reduces the time taken to hit the best and stable clocks but also ensures that the card would run stable in all applications by testing a known set of voltage points that ensures no variability to be caused by different games or load.

NVIDIA has also promised that their OC scanner application won’t crash or TDR since the utility would be collecting data and errors or windows corruption would be detected far before they become a nuisance for the user. During their presentation, NVIDIA showed the OC scanner pushed the cards to 2130 MHz with 1.06V.

New RTX Brand With New RTX Coolers – Diecast Aluminum Shroud, Dual Anodization For Scratch Resistance and Durability

All of this is packed beneath an elegant looking cooler that doesn’t use the same design pattern as the GeForce 10 series founders edition cards. Those went with a more polygonal texture but this is more of a plain design featuring a die-cast aluminum shroud with a matte black finish in the center.geforce-rtx-2080-technical-photography-backplate-002-custom-1030x592-6839807

The RTX 2080 / 2080 Ti logo is seen on the side and has LEDs to glow when the card is operational. The shroud engulfs the entire card, leading from the top and even the back which acts as a backplate and looks very neat.

The edges of the diecast aluminum fan shroud are diamond-cut to create a precision reflective trim, dual anodization offers durability and scratch resistance, and the forged, stamped and machined cover provides a classy rigid-yet-lightweight frame for the open cooler design.

Then, to make the shroud look even better, we utilized Physical Vapor Deposition on the RTX 2080 name label, and LED-lit the GeForce GTX logo, creating a unique look that’s never before seen before now on a graphics card.

You might also notice that the card is fully enveloped by a beautiful shroud, and even the NVLINK connector is protected by a matching removable cover, giving GeForce RTX GPUs a clean appearance. And to round things out, there’s a black anodized bracket, a stamped aluminum backplate with GeForce RTX branding, for a consistent black and silver appearance across the entire card.

Next Generation Graphics Cards With Next-Gen Display Connectivity

Since this is a next-generation launch, we were expecting to see new display connections on the cards and that was confirmed during the announcement a few hours ago.

nvidia-rtx-io-1030x397-7705428

The display outputs for the card include 3 DisplayPort 1.4 (4K @ 120 Hz), 1 HDMI 2.0b (4K @ 60 Hz/ HDCP 2.2 support) and USB Type-C connector for the Virtual link for next-generation VR headsets which means that it is capable to support all next-gen displays with new standards. Power is fed through a dual 8 pin connector configuration.

We used the following test system for comparison between the different graphics cards. The latest drivers that were available at the time of testing were used from AMD and NVIDIA on an updated version of Windows 10 with the exception of the SUPER cards which were tested using GeForce 431.16 drivers. All games that were tested were patched to the latest version for better performance optimization for NVIDIA and AMD GPUs.

We compiled the power consumption results by testing each card under idle and full stress when the card was running games. Each graphics card manufacturer sets a default TDP for the card which can vary from vendor to vendor depending on the extra clocks or board features they plug in on their custom cards. Default TDP for the RTX 2070 SUPER is 215W while the default TDP for the RTX 2060 SUPER is 175W.

super-power-draw-1030x580-7378078

The 12nm process which Turing cards are based on is a refinement of the 16nm process from TSMC. The RTX 2060 SUPER and RTX 2070 SUPER do consume more power than their existing solutions due to the core bump and higher clock speeds. The RTX 2060 SUPER sees a 10W jump when it comes to power draw at full load while the RTX 2070 SUPER features a 25W bump in load power draw.

No graphics card review is complete without evaluating its temperatures and thermal load. Both Founders Edition cards feature a similar design with a dual axial fan cooler, large aluminum fin stack with a vapor chamber and a contact base.

super-thermals-1030x580-7401278

The thermal performance for the reference cooler is similar as before since nothing much has been changed. The RTX 2060 SUPER is slightly cooler than the RTX 2060 while the RTX 2070 SUPER performs well in load but has a higher idle temperature. This is partially due to the different GPU die being used on the RTX 2070 SUPER. The RTX 2070 featured the TU106 GPU while the RTX 2070 SUPER features the bigger TU104 die and as you can see with the RTX 2080 FE, it seems to sit tight at around 30-35C on idle.

The lower temperatures also mean that there’s more headroom for overclocking available and Boost 4.0 would work extremely well on these cards, pushing it beyond the rated boost frequency with the new algorithms.

Well, folks there you have it, the RTX 2060 SUPER comes in at roughly 14% faster in our testing and the RTX 2070 SUPER comes in just over 13% faster than the RTX 2070 Vanilla in our testing. Of course, some games garner bigger wins than others but at no point do either of them fall behind either of the initially launched variants.

Now that performance means diddly squat if the pricing isn’t done properly and that has been the focus of numerous leaks in the days leading up to the launch. The RTX 20 series is going to undergo a bit of a shift when the RTX 2060 SUPER and RTX 2070 SUPER are available on July 9th but will continue to be bookended by the RTX 2060 Vanilla starting at $349 on the entry level of RTX and topping out with the RTX 2080Ti starting at $999 with the Founders Edition maintaining its $1199 price tag. Where does that lead the new SUPER cards to sit? Well, the RTX 2060 SUPER will start at $399 which DOES include the Founders Edition at that price point. This is a fairly good price for the card considering it is right in line with the existing RTX 2070 Vanilla Founders Edition that sells for $599.

p1010645-1030x580-6956324

The RTX 2070 SUPER shakes things up a bit more by taking what is nearly RTX 2080 Vanilla Founders Edition’s $799 performance and selling it for a starting price of $499 and that too includes the Founders Edition for that price. So to recap that, the RTX 2060 SUPER cards start at $399 and the RTX 2070 SUPER cards start at $499 and basically uproot the cards sitting in a tier above them, so what does that mean for the existing RTX 2070s and RTX 2080s in the market? Well, expect them to be phased out during this refresh and the new super cards including the $699 RTX 2080 SUPER to come in a replace them with much better performance per dollar than what has been offered previously by the RTX lineup.

I want to address what some of you have likely already typed in the comment section regarding these cards. I can already hear you, THIS should have been what they launched from the beginning! I hear you and I did address this to them in a call, they were forthcoming in that they may not have been able to pull this off before but thanks to of the entire process from yields to the total cost of building the cards coming more in line they were able to refine the lineup and offer better options to buyers. Another thing is regarding this being a response to their competition?

p1010651-1030x580-2838435

Well, it is competition after all and based on the information available in AMD’s own slides regard expected performance of the upcoming Navi based Radeon RX 5700 Series and their lead over the vanilla RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 it looks like NVIDIA has accepted their challenge and preempted a SUPER sneak attack to maintain their lead in the classes of their competition.
