Cyberlink PowerDVD Becomes the World’s First 4K Blu-ray Certified Software Media Player

While 4K display in TVs has pretty much completely taken over the new release and premium sectors of that industry, 4K UHD content still has a long ways to go before it becomes a dominant media format. However, given the technological trends of 2016, we have strong expectation that 4K video will grow enormously in 2017.

One new technology which will help this process along nicely is the new arrival of a 4K-compatible version of CyberLink PowerDVD, which has been certified by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) for playback of Ultra HD Blu-ray disc media.

What this effectively means for consumers is that by 2017 or earlier, more PCs with the right 4K-capable hardware will be able to handle 4K Blu-ray discs in their native resolution and without playback problems. This of course means that many PC users will now have further access to a growing library of 4K Blu-ray movies that already numbers more than 200 titles in total.

According to CyberLink CEO Dr. Jau Huang, ““With more than 300 million copies sold, PowerDVD is the definitive standard for media players, providing customers with the ultimate in home entertainment for the last 15 years,”

The CyberLink CEO also explained that, ““Today’s Ultra HD Blu-ray certification means we can once again bring our customers the very latest in video and audio technology, ensuring they can enjoy the ultimate 4K experience.”

The newest version of PowerDVD is already available from the CyberLink Store but the 4K UHD Blu-ray playback support features of the software won’t be active until the beginning of 2017.

The new 4K ultra HD Blu-ray format that was introduced in early 2016 now consists of over 200 titles, of which a majority have been released by several major Hollywood studios. Available content includes numerous new release Hollywood Blaockbuster movie titles and also consists of a number of older movies, documentaries and other content types.

Aside from featuring 4K ultra HD resolution. The 4K UHD Blu-ray format also offers HDR mastering in its content. This can be enjoyed by users of the discs who also have a compatible 4K ultra HD TV. HDR for viewing these movies on PC displays is something that hasn’t yet arrived to the consumer market however.
