It has been possible to create mobile hotspot or virtual Wi-Fi on Windows computers since the days of Windows 7 but creating a mobile hotspot was not a straight-forward job back then.
We had to either use the Command Prompt or use third-party tools to create and manage mobile hotspot.
Starting with Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Microsoft made it easier creating and using mobile hotspot by adding a dedicated mobile hotspot section in the Settings app. That means, you no longer need to open the Command Prompt or use third-party software to use mobile hotspot. You can create a mobile hotspot with a few clicks now and connect up to eight devices to your PC’s mobile hotspot.
When you turn on the mobile hotspot feature, Windows 10 automatically adds a name (SSID) and password to the hotspot. But if you want to change the default name and password of the mobile hotspot, here is how to do that.
Change mobile hotspot name (SSID) and password
To change the name (SSID) or mobile hotspot or both, follow these directions.
Step 1: Open the Settings app. In the Settings app, navigate to Network & Internet > Mobile hotspot.
Step 2: In the Mobile hotspot section, you can see the current name and password for the mobile hotspot. If you want to change the name or password or both, click the Edit button.
Step 3: Type your new mobile hotspot name and password (must contain at least eight characters) and then click the Save button. We suggest you use a combination of upper and lower-case letters and numbers in the password. That’s it! You have just changed your mobile hotspot name and password.
Please turn off and on the mobile hotspot once to start using the new name and password.
Tip: Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile hotspot page also displays the number of devices currently connected to your PC’s mobile hotspot.
