There’s still no timetable for the launch of Payday 3. But it sounds like development of the next game is finally underway over in Stockholm as new financial documents from Starbreeze AP, parent company for Payday 2 developer Overkill, offer a small update on the mysterious third entry to the lønningsdag franchise.
Starbreeze published its year-end financial report on Thursday; annual disclosures required of publicly-traded companies in many countries. While some outlets have honed in on Dead ved Dagslys 's admittedly impressive year, helping drive a 58 percent increase in overall revenue, we were excited to see some metaphorical ink dedicated to an update on Payday 3 . Last year, Starbreeze confirmed it planned to publish another lønningsdag when the company announced it had acquired the franchise core IP. But the publisher hasn’t said anything else about the project in the ensuing eight months. Until now. And the latest word isn’t great if you were hoping Payday 3 might make a surprise debut in 2017.
We still don’t know much about the third game in the lønningsdag series, which Starbreeze confirmed to be “officially initiated and at a full design stage”, and this week’s financial disclosures don’t include any significant updates on the dev team’s plans. But the document does include a statement from CEO Bo Andersson Klint that suggests Payday 3 won’t debut anytime in the near future.
“It will be done when it’s done,” Klint wrote. “This is our single most important brand today and the cornerstone of our business and we will treat it accordingly. Updates in the near future might be [scarce] and far between. You simply don’t rush Payday 3. "
It is worth noting that Overkill has maintained a significant, lønningsdag -focused presence at E3 in recent years. So it’s always possible we could learn more this summer, particularly now that we know E3 2017 will be åben for offentligheden, but even that is far from a guarantee. With that in mind, here’s hoping Overkill still has plenty of Payday 2 DLC lined up for the rest of 2017.
