How to use hashtags on Instagram

You can add hashtags in the caption or comments of your post. If you have a public account and add hashtags to a post, the post will be visible on the corresponding hashtag page.

To tag a photo or video with a hashtag:

  1. Take or upload a photo or video.
  2. Choose to add a filter, then tap Next.
  3. Tap Write a caption… and type # followed by text or emoji (example: #flower).
  4. Tap Share.

If you want to add a hashtag to a post you’ve already uploaded, edit the caption or include your hashtag in a comment on your photo.

After you tag your post with a hashtag, you’ll be able to tap the hashtag to see a page that shows all photos and videos people have uploaded with that hashtag.

Important things to keep in mind while using Instagram Hahstags:

  • When people with private profiles tag posts, they won’t appear publicly on hashtag pages.
  • Numbers are allowed in hashtags. However, spaces and special characters, like $ or %, won’t work.
  • You can only tag your own posts. You can’t tag other people’s photos/videos.
  • You can use up to 30 tags on a post. If you include more than 30 tags on a single photo/video, your comment won’t post.

FIX – Instagram Hashtags Not Working Anymore

1. Use Specific Hashtags

Using hashtags is very tricky. People often assume using any set of hashtags would help and thus increase the engagement. This is wrong. Using random hashtags is a big mistake and will only reduce your overall engagement.

Understand this – Instagram has the ability to follow hashtags which means a Instagram hashtag is a possible factor for boosting engagement. The latest changes in the Instagram’s algorithm focuses more on something called relevant hashtags.

The hashtags are engaged based on the type of the content. For example, if someone is posting a picture of car and he is using hashtags related to food or gardening – engagement will certainly drop as the content is not relevant to hashtags and chances are that someone would report the hashtags.

Remember that users now have the feature to mark the hashtagged content as something “they don’t want to see”. Also when someone would search for car {the post you just uploaded on the feed} he won’t find it in the hashtags related to food or gardening. So it is always wise to use the relevant hashtags corresponding to the the content being uploaded.

Just remember, if you are uploading a picture of car, use hashtags related to car and associated subjects {such as race, driving, supercar, etc.}.

2. Use 30 Hashtags

Instagram allows maximum of 30 hashtags in a post. If you include more than 30 tags on a single photo/video, your comment/text won’t post. You can use hashtags either in the comments or caption. It doesn’t makes any difference.

3. Finding Best Hashtags

Finding and selecting best hashtags is very tricky. Almost everyone faces this tough scenario where they fail to select the best hashtags. But, it is very basic to grasp this knowledge. Here is waht you should do:

  1. Use total of 30 hashtags. But, also remember to use 28 or 29 hashtags once in a week {with the respective post}. This is to avoid “hashtags stuffing”.
  2. Of the total 30 hashtags. Us 20 with greater number of post and those can be generic – based on post and loation. Other 10 should be strictly post specific. If you are uploading a post of car, use 20 hashtags related to motor vehicle, race, driving and location. While teh rest 10 should be specific to the post. Assume that you are uploading the pic of BMW, so use hashtags related to BMW and its variants.
  3. Out of 30, use 20 hashtags which have less than 10M posts and the rest 10 hashtags should be in range of 5M-3M posts. It is very simple to understand that if you are using a hashtags with 100M posts the chances are very less that your post will be featured in top-trending posts. It is called competitive measurement and always consider average or fair number of posts associated with the respective image.

4. Don’t Ever Use Banned Hashtags

Nothing to explain. Don’t ever use banned hashtags. Also don’t use hashtags which are associated with subjects of porn, gambling, drugs, and other banned words.

Following these suggestions would help to boost your Instagram engagement.
