Konami has revealed their new direction for the long-running Football game series in a new trailer launched today.
eFootball will be coming to all next-generation platforms this autumn, as Konami aims for complete cross-play across all platforms for its series. The game will be available for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC, with Android and iOS versions to arrive later. IGN originally revealed this news in an interview with series producer Seitaro Kimura, where he “explained that eFootball is aiming to take a ‘platform’ approach with regular updates – there will no longer be annual paid releases, but the platform will get free, yearly updates for new seasons.”
The series, which was called Pro Evolution Soccer in the west, and Winning Eleven in Japan, will now be built upon a new engine created with Unreal Engine 4. In contrast, previously, Konami’s in house FOX engine was used to develop the games. This would mean that the game would be functionally some for all platforms available, including mobile. The popular PES mobile is thus expected to be phased out.
eFootball modes and features
At launch, eFootball plans to start with exhibition matches between 9 clubs, as explained in the roadmap of the game, which was also revealed today. The other modes, of which there are expected to be many, will be sold as DLCs in the future. This would allow players to play whatever they want in the game without paying for the modes they didn’t want to play.
Konami has said that “the game is designed to be “fair and balanced” for all players, despite its transition to a free-to-play model – which will also seemingly include Battle Pass-like unlocks called Match Passes.”
Lionel Messi, Argentinian footballer and a megastar in the world of football, will be the face of the game, with Peter Drury and Jim Beglin returning as English commentators. The sharable and customisable options that were a beloved feature in the original PES games is also confirmed to be returning.
