Galaxy Bloom: Samsung’s rumoured "Galaxy Fold 2" leaks after secret CES event

Bloomin’ heck, another Samsung foldable

Samsung’s next folding phone might be called the Galaxy Bloom. That’s according to a leak that surfaced in the wake of a rumoured “secret meeting” hosted by Samsung at CES 2020 in Las Vegas yesterday. The leak describes a new foldable smartphone that’s being aimed squarely at young women.

The Galaxy Bloom reportedly differs from the existing Galaxy Fold in one crucial way: where the Fold has a vertical hinge, allowing it to fold like a book, the Bloom has a horizontal one, folding inwards like the clamshell phones of yore.

The design, says Samsung (via SamMobile), actually draws inspiration from French cosmetics firm Lancome, which is well-known for its clamshell powder compact cases. Samsung reportedly hopes that as a result, the Bloom will appeal to young women, who are supposedly already familiar with the clamshell form factor.

According to SamMobile, the Bloom will ditch the plastic display material found on the Fold in favour of Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) – possibly in an effort to avoid the screen issues that marred the Fold’s launch.

While we don’t know much else about Samsung’s new foldable, it seems likely that the Bloom is the rumoured Galaxy Fold 2 we’ve been hearing about lately, particularly as the rumours in question refer to a clamshell-style foldable to rival the Motorola Razr.

Samsung is hosting one of its annual Galaxy Unpacked events on 11 February in San Francisco. We will no doubt witness the launch of the Galaxy S11 series, and possibly that of the Galaxy A51 and A71 as well. What remains to be seen, however, is whether the Galaxy Bloom will make a cameo appearance.

Sadly, we weren’t invited to the secret CES press event from which this information comes. We have however been trekking around Las Vegas this week, and we’ve spent a lot of time with Samsung’s other offerings: The Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite. You can find out what we thought via the links above.
