We all use a number of USB Devices every day. From plugging in our phones for charging to using our Pen Drives, we are making the use of USB Drives. But sometimes, a Windows computer throws an error of Unknown USB Device. If you receive the Unknown USB Device error message, followed by either of the following explanations, then this post gives you generic suggestions to troubleshoot the problem:
- Device Descriptor Request Failed.
- Port reset failed.
- The device failed enumeration.
- Set address failed.
- Error code 43.
Unknown USB Device error message
We will be undertaking the following fixes to get rid of the Unknown USB Device error message on Windows 10,
- Change Power Options.
- Update, Rollback the USB Drivers.
- Run USB Troubleshooter
- Turn off Fast Startup.
1] Using the Power Options
First of all, start by hitting the WIN + R keyboard combination or search for Run in the search box to launch the Run box. Type powercfg.cpl and hit Enter. This will launch the Power Options window.
For your selected power plan, click on Change Plan Settings. This will open a new page.
Then click on Change advanced power settings.
This will launch a new window with a lot of power consumption options.
Expand the option that says USB Settings. Next, set the USB selective suspend setting to be Disabled for both the scenarios: On Battery and Plugged in.
Click on OK and then reboot your PC for the changes to take effect.
2] Update, Rollback or Disable the Culprit Drivers
The main drivers that might be a cause for this particular file will be marked with a small yellow exclamation mark iconinside of the Device Manager. If not, look out for sub-entries under Universal Serial Bus controllers entry, then we suggest you Update these drivers and mainly Generic USB Hub driver.
Alternatively, you can Uninstall them and then Reboot your computer and allow Windows to reinstall them automatically.
3] Run USB Troubleshooter
Run the Hardware and Device Troubleshooter or the Windows USB Troubleshooter and check if it helps. The automated tools check the hardware or USB connection to the computer for any known issues and fix them automatically.
4] Turn off Fast Startup
To disable Fast Startup, press the WINKEY + R combo to launch the Run utility. Now type in control to launch the Control Panel.
Then click on Hardware and Sound and then click on Power Options.
Now, from the left side menu pane, select Choose what the power buttons do.
And then click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
Now Uncheck the entry that says Turn on fast startup (Recommended) and then click on Save Changes.
Reboot your computer to check if the issue is fixed or not.
