Apple introduced fast charging on the iPhone with its recently released iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. Apple is quite late to the party when we speak of fast charging. The technology has been present on Android phones for a long time and over the time, it has gone better. Apple released its iOS 11.2 update to the public yesterday that included support for fast charging. However, Apple’s implementation does raise a question on how the technology stacks up against flagship Android phones? So let’s find out about the charging speed.
While The iPhone X’s Charging Speed Might Be Slower Than Some, It Is Clearly Ahead Of The Giants In The Industry
According to the test conducted by Tom’s Guide, the latest iPhone models supporting fast charging were stacked up against the latest flagship Android smartphones. The smartphones used in the test include the OnePlus 5T, LG V30, Google Pixel 2 and the Galaxy Note 8. From Apple’s side, the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the latest and greatest iPhone X was part of the test.
The Android smartphones were tested using the included fast charging accessories. The iPhone models, on the other hand, does not ship with a fast charger. Instead, you have to purchase a separate 29-watt power adapter and a USB-C to Lightning cable. So that’s basically a win for Android in this regard.
As to begin with, the first session demonstrated charging time of 30 minutes in which the OnePlus 5T is a clear winner, reachinf up to 59 percent of charging. The second spot went to the LG V30 which charged 53 percent in the same time span. Th iPhone X ranked third, reaching 50 percent in the first 30 minutes. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were not that far behind as they too reached 49 and 47 percent, respectively.
Now, the test extended to a time span of an hour in which the results were pretty similar. Again, the OnePlus 5T reached 93 percent in an hour. LG V30 reached 86 percent and the iPhone X ranked in the third place again with 81 percent of charging. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus reached 81 and 80 percent, respectively. So there’s not a world of difference between the charging speeds of the three new iPhone models.
We can clearly see at this point that some Android flagships are ahead of the new iPhone models in fast charging speed. However, we should also not curtain the fact that Apple’s flagships are ranked higher than the Google Pixel 2 and the Galaxy Note 8. So that’s quite an improvement on Apple’s part as well.
While fast charging is great and quite helpful in situations when you need an urgent charge, if you do not have the 29-watt power adapter, the charging speed will be very slow. For instance, on standard charging, the iPhone X charges only 17 percent in 30 minutes. This is quite low. Nonetheless, it’s finally great to see fast charging support for the iPhone.
