How To Disable Chrome New Tab Page Background Picture

I have been using the Chromium-based Edge as my primary web browser ever since the first public beta was released over a year ago. My other browser is Firefox, although I use it rarely.

Recently, I installed the latest version of the Google Chrome browser as I wanted to check how the Chrome has progressed over the past year or so, especially considering that both Chrome and new Edge have most things in common.

One of the things that drew my attention was the new tab page background. Chrome now uses a picture as the new tab page background instead of the original plane-white background. Chrome allowed setting an image as the new tab page background for some time now, but it now displays one by default.

Although the image on the new tab page looks reasonably good, not all users like it. Moreover, you might quickly get bored seeing the same picture every time you open a new tab page.

If you extensively use the Chrome browser, you might want to hide or remove the picture from the Chrome new tab page. Luckily, removing the picture from the new tab page background is easy.

Let us see how to stop the Chrome browser from using a picture as the new tab page background and restore the original no-background or white background.

Note that we are using the Chrome installed on a PC running Windows 10 in this guide. However, the instructions must hold true for Chrome on Mac as well.

Step 1: On the new tab page of Chrome, click on the small pencil icon located at the bottom right corner of the page. Clicking on the pencil icon will bring up the “Customize this page” page.
