macOS Big Sur 11.3 is now out and it includes the “Hello” screen saver designed for the new iMac models. However, while the screensaver will run on M1 Macs, getting it to work on older Macs is a challenge – but not an impossible one.
The Hello screensaver is intended for the new 24in iMacs. It is hidden in macOS 11.3 though and can run on any Mac running that software.
Here’s how you can get the Hello screensaver on your Macs.
You’ll need the macOS 11.3.
- You will be able to find the new screensaver in the following directory: Finder: / System / Library / Screen Savers.
- Locate the screen saver “Hello.saver”.
- Copy this to the desktop and rename it “Hellocopy.saver”.
- Double-click on “Hellocopy.saver” to proceed with the installation adding your password for the system.
- Now the new screen saver will be available in the Desktop & Screen Saver menu of System Preferences.
The screensaver will write Hello in various languages and in various shades. You can tweek these settings.

There are also different themes for colours, fonts and language, which can also be set in the system settings for the screen saver.
