Disappearing messages on the messengers are a new trend for a couple of years. Now your Instagram messages are about to go invisible. Facebook is introducing Vanish Mode on its Instagram DMs and Messenger, a new feature that allows you to send messages that disappear from the chat history entirely. While Vanish Mode is new to Instagram, but you’ve been able to send self-destructing photos and videos since 2018. So you still need to know how that’s done, here’s how to send disappearing messages on Instagram.
Instagram Vanish Mode
Facebook has been testing the disappearing message feature on all its messaging services including WhatsApp since earlier this year. Now both Messenger and Instagram are officially getting the Vanish Mode.

As the name suggests, this feature enables a “mode” where you can send private messages that will be self-deleted after serving their purpose, leaving no history, just like web browsers’ “Incognito Mode”.
Steps to enter Vanish Mode
1] Open Messages on Instagram by tapping the new Messenger icon on the top right corner. Also, make sure that your app is updated to the latest version.
2] Now select who you want to send a disappearing message to. You can do this by tapping the messages and searching the username of that person.
3] Once you are on the chat page, you’ll need to enter the Vanish mode by swiping up on your chat. Moreover, the other party will also have to enable the new feature.
Once you enter this mode, your chat screen will go black and you’ll see a note at the top telling that you’ve entered Vanish Mode.
4] Now compose that sneaky message. You can send photos, videos, or texts in this mode.
5] Specify how many times you want your message to be opened from options-
- View Once which only allows the message to be seen one time,
- Allow Replay which allows a replay of your message once more, or
- Keep in Chat which keeps a preview visible in your thread.
6] Now send it.
This is how you can send disappearing messages on Instagram. Vanish Mode and some other new messaging features are in the testing phase in select countries and will roll out soon for all users globally. So if you don’t see the new Vanish mode even after updating your app, just be patient.
