Windows 10 AutoVPN feature allows users to securely connect two systems by creating a virtual point-to-point connection via a technique called Tunneling. This helps in easy and fast access to files and folders. Once a connection is established, the user’s computer or mobile device can be connected to the Internet as usual via secure VPN servers. The communication then becomes safe as all the traffic is encrypted and routed securely. The ISP route is completely bypassed.
AutoVPN is convenient and easy to use since it lets you access your work resources from your Windows 10 desktop even when you’re away from the office. It provides a VPN profile that contains information about your corporate authentication method and server. Setting up AutoVPN in Windows 10 is easy and most part of the setup occurs automatically. AutoVPN in Windows 10
Before getting started, there are certain conditions to be met. These include installation of Windows 10 Anniversary Update v1607 or an upward version of it. You can check for the VPN option availability by clicking on the network icon and locating VPN option.
While using AutoVPN, a user will be prompted to enable authentication. 2 methods available for this:
- Windows Hello
- Multi-Factor Authentication
To an extent, both methods simplify the process of connecting two systems one is away from the office and helps to keep data secure.
Once you proceed in the proper sequence as described above and have all things in order, a profile for AutoVPN will be automatically delivered to your device.
It will contain all the requisite information, needed to connect to a corporate network, i.e. the authentication method that is supported and the server that connects to your device.
By default, AutoVPN will choose the best entry point based on your geographic location, so you won’t need to change your connection site.
However, if you want to undo this or override your connection location, follow these steps:
Select the Network settings icon located on the taskbar. Next, choose AutoVPN from the list of options at the top.
Now under ‘Network & Internet’ window, select ‘AutoVPN’. When done, hit ‘Advanced Options’ tab.
Next, select ‘Edit’ option visible under the AutoVPN window and select Server name or address in the Edit VPN connection window to change the setting from Automatic to your preferred server name or address.
To turn off auto-connect, uncheck Let apps automatically use this VPN connection.
