Earlier in December, there were reports that Google Chrome is rolling out parallel download feature on its upcoming version to accelerate download speeds. Chrome 64 for Android, which is currently under testing on the developer channel, has outlined how this new feature will work. According to the commit, the parallel download feature automatically comes into action when a download is active for more than a couple of seconds. It will create 3 parallel jobs to download this file, thus, accelerating the speed of the download for chrome users.
Google confirmed enabling parallel download feature by default for all users running Chrome version 64 and above. The feature will be available for all the Chrome browser channels including Chrome Canary, Chrome Dev and also the nightly Chrome build, with Chrome Beta and Chrome Stable to follow sometime afterward.
Enable Parallel Download Feature in Google Chrome for Android:
Parallel downloading in Google Chrome can be turned on by enabling a Chrome flag called “chrome-parallel-download”. The chrome flag was first added around some five months back, and it was being improved since then. Chrome parallel downloading flag is available in Chrome for Android and also on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chrome OS.
Chrome Beta users can activate the Parallel downloading feature on their Chrome browser by following the below procedure.
- Copy and paste “chrome://flags” in your address bar.
- On Chrome flags page, type “parallel” in the search box and look for the flag called ‘parallel downloading.’
- Tap Default and choose ‘Enable option’ from the drop-down menu.
- After enabling the feature, Chrome will have to restart to apply the changes, tap Relaunch Now.
- Now, the parallel downloading is enabled, and you are all set to go.
Alternatively, you can also type chrome://flags#chrome-parallel-download in your address bar to enable the feature.
Parallel downloads will probably not make a major difference for most users who only occasionally download small files from the Internet, but you may notice a difference when downloading larger files such as ROM zips.
