Windows 10 Redstone 5 (RS5) Builds Changelog

Windows 10 Redstone 5 (RS5) Builds Changelog

Recently Microsoft provided a new option “Skip Ahead” to Windows 10 Insiders which could be enabled using Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Insider Program page. This “Skip Ahead” functionality was implemented for those people who wanted to test the next Windows 10 version which will be released next year. Microsoft has codenamed it as Redstone 5 as usual.

So now there are 2 types of Windows 10 Insider Preview builds:

  • Regular builds which are coming from RS4_RELEASE branch to all Insiders.
  • Special builds which are coming from RS_PRERELEASE branch (transitioned to RS5) to insiders who opted in to “Skip Ahead” functionality.

According to Microsoft, Skip Ahead functionality has been introduced to test the ability to release Windows 10 builds from two different branches at the same time. After the release of Windows 10 Fall Creators update to public, Insiders in the Fast ring are receiving RS4 builds and insiders in “Skip Ahead” ring will receive RS5 builds.

According to Microsoft, only a small subset of Insiders in the Fast ring was allowed to opt in to Skip Ahead as they still need Insiders to test RS4 builds. Since many Insiders already opted in Skip Ahead, the limit for Skip Ahead has already been met. If you are not already in Skip Ahead, you will see the Skip Ahead option under Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Insider Program greyed out. Microsoft will notify Insiders if they open Skip Ahead again.

Once RS4 is released to public, all insiders in the Fast ring will be moved back to the RS_PRERELEASE branch and then the Fast ring and Skip Ahead will start receiving the same RS5 builds.

Please keep in mind that builds from RS_PRERELEASE will be less stable and might contain bugs and issues as the team starts checking in new code.

In this article, we’ll list all changes, improvements and new features found in newer RS5 builds. It’ll help you in understanding what changes and new features will become a part of the upcoming version of Windows 10 operating system.

Today Microsoft has released first RS5 build to Insiders who opted in to “Skip Ahead” program.
