Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a ton of secret courses and characters already unlocked when you boot up the racing game for the first time but there are still some things you can unlock as you progress your way through each Cup. One of the secret unlockables in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is Gold Mario.
While Gold Mario doesn’t take up a slot in the character selection screen, he does appear in a pop-up box when you select Metal Mario — similar to how you can change the color of characters.
So how do you unlock Gold Mario in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? Well, it’s straightforward and yet takes a lot of skill. To unlock Gold Mario you’ll need to finish in first place in all 12 cups at 200cc. Then Gold Mario will appear as an option in the character select screen.

For years, the hardest difficulty in Mario Kart was 150cc, but Mario Kart 8 for the Nintendo Wii U introduced 200cc as an even larger challenge for players. And believe us, it’s not easy to finish in first place while racing on this difficulty.
Gold Mario joins King Boo and the Inkling Girl and Boy as some of the new drivers introduced in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
