Moto E4 in a nutshell: Specs, UK price and release date

Get ready for the launch of the Moto E4, the latest handset in the great-value Moto E family, in 2017. Here’s what’s leaked so far, including key specs and a possible UK price and release date.

Motorola may not technically be a thing anymore since the company was sucked up by Lenovo, but the Moto mobile brand is still going strong. In fact, we’ve seen some of the best Moto phones of recent years launched in the past few months. That includes some smart modular-style flagship handsets in the form of the Moto Z and Moto Z Play, which can be expanded via the nifty Moto Mods.

Of course, Moto’s true strength lies the budget end of the mobile market. The new Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus offer fantastic value for money, proving solid enough to replace most premium devices, but at under half the cost. And we should see a fresh entry in the Moto E range in 2017, namely the Moto E4.

The Moto E4 will be a lot more basic than the Moto G phones, like the Moto E 4G before it. But despite the simple specs, you can expect a fully-fledged smartphone experience, albeit with few frills. The best part is of course the asking price, which should seriously undercut rivals, making the Moto E4 a great choice as a replacement or secondary handset.

Lenovo has accidentally leaked the Moto E4 ahead of its launch, with all of the main details including specs and features revealed. Now we know the Moto E4 will appear alongside a higher-end Moto E4 Plus and both phones will come packing decent specs for a low-end price.

Moto E4 key features

Despite an affordable price the Moto E4 should come with a metal back for a more premium feel than the previous plastic Moto E3. The Moto E4 is expected to feature a fingerprint sensor on the front, NFC built-in, 4G connectivity and weigh in at 151g.

The Moto E4 rocks quite similar specs to the Moto E3. So far it appears the all-new handset will pack a 5-inch 720p IPS display, which should be fine for web browsing and enjoying the odd spot of YouTube.

Expect the Moto E4 to come packing in a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6737M processor backed by 2GB of RAM. That’s again fine for quite basic use, but don’t expect to do much fast-paced gaming, especially over the long haul. You’ll also get 16GB of storage, expandable via microSD.

Under the hood running the show will be the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS. Moto mobiles tend to pack a vanilla version of Android with no clunky overlay on top, which helps to provide a smooth everyday experience. This should also mean the Moto E4 is one of the earlier handsets in line for an update when new software upgrades are released.

When it comes to snapping the Moto E4 should be quite capable for basic everyday shots thanks to its 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras. Both should also be able to manage HD video recording without much bother.

Lenovo has allegedly opted to cram in a 2,800mAh battery, which is removable to boot – a feature not commonly found on modern mobiles. This should be plenty for all-day battery life, with the option to swap out a spare for those wanting to go longer without a charger.

Moto E4 UK price and release date

The Lenovo Moto E4 leak has revealed that the handset should be priced at a wallet friendly €150 (roughly £125 here in the UK). Considering the specs on offer, that’s a very good price point.

Leaks suggest that we should be able to buy the Lenovo Moto E4 in Europe from June or July time. The Moto E4 is expected to come in grey, gold and blue colour options.
