We covered a How-To on using emoji natively on Windows 10 and thought it’s a fun way to write messages in various programs. But never thought of using it to name a folder or a file. It’s kind of fun. Thanks for the tip.
The process to rename a file or folder using emoji is the same. All you need to do is to highlight the file or folder and hit F2 key on your keyboard. Then when you are in editing mode, press Win+. (Windows key and Period key the same time) keyboard shortcut to bring up the emoji panel.
Insert the emojis you want to add and hit X to close the emoji panel to finish up the renaming.
You can also use the same process when saving a new file in Word or any other programs.
It looks fun but quite meanless when it comes to naming a file or folder. And it looks gibberish and is useless when displaying a list of file in a Command Prompt or PowerShell console. It’s definitely not a good idea if you are to access these folders or files through a script.
It seems that the files or folders naming with emoji characters can only be accessed through File Explorer.
Lastly, if you thought having emoji characters in the file/folder name changes the basic rules how files or folders are named, you are wrong. The same restriction rules still apply. Another words, you still can’t use the following symbols to name a file or folder.

- / – forward slash
- : – semi colon
- * – asterisk
- ? – question mark
- ” – quotation mark
- < >
- | – pipe
