Note 8 Freezing for Some Users, Samsung Promises Fix

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 owners are reporting a bug that freezes the phone when calls are made or received on the native dialer.

The issue has been reported by Galaxy Note 8 owners in the US, UK, and Spain with baseband versions N950USQU1AQI5 and N950FXXU1AQHB. When users try to use speed dial, make calls from the list of recent contacts, or even open the contacts app itself, the devices will freeze, forcing owners to reboot.

“I set up speed dial and sometimes it will call but not show the contact info and sometimes it will just outright freeze on me,” one user wrote on a Samsung forum. “I am currently dialing each and every one of my contacts as of now to avoid this issue. Also I see that some people are having issues with thirdparty apps which I haven’t ran into yet and hope I don’t. I have tried everything and it doesn’t seem to fix it and seems like Samsung will have to dispatch a hot fix soon.”

Samsung told PCMag that updates will be pushed out to devices soon. “We have received a limited number of enquiries from customers about this and will be rolling out software updates in the coming weeks,” according to a spokesperson.

A post on Android Police suggests that a greater number of apps—including Pokémon Go—will also trigger Note 8 freezes.

UPDATE: In an updated statement released tonight, Samsung said it’s “aware of a limited number of reports about Note 8 devices experiencing an issue with some of their applications. Any consumer who experiences this issue should update their apps in the Samsung Galaxy Store and the Google Play Store. Any consumers with questions should contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG so that we can help them.”
