While stock problems are expected to continue until early 2021, NVIDIA is reportedly planning to launch new GPUs in December 2020. If at this stage we are still in the rumour mill, the rumour has been coming back with insistence for the last few days. Needless to say, NVIDIA is driving the market crazy!
The RTX 3080, 3070 and 3060 Ti in December?
Coming straight from videocard sources, the information of a change of feet from NVIDIA is going to make your teeth grind. The brand is said to have revised its plans for new GPUs for the end of the year. As we know, the 3070 has already had the right to a change of date, to be pushed back to October 29th. This time, the date changes would concern models that are still unofficial: the 3080 20 GB, the 3070 16 GB and the 3060 Ti. A 3070 Ti, using the complete GA104 chip would have been considered before being cancelled.
On the 3080 and 3070 side, NVIDIA would have therefore planned a refresh, by increasing the video memory of its cards. The 3080 would thus go from 10 GB to 20 GB. The 3070, not yet released, would benefit from a refresh by going from 8 GB to 16 GB, a nice increase compared to the 2070 and 2080 offering 8 GB only. These two new cards would be expected in December.
In addition, a 3060 Ti, using the GA104-200 chip, is expected to be launched in mid-November (this information is confirmed by other sources). The performance of this card for the moment is unknown, but should approach the performance of the RTX 2080 or even 2080 Super .
An answer to AMD?
This sudden change of date and this increase in video memory would be in order to better compete with AMD. The reds would have planned to launch 3 GPUs, all based on the biggest NAVI 21 chip, with 16 GB of memory.
Videocardz having also received information from the manufacturers about Big Navi. AMD would have targeted the performance of the GA104, thinking that the RTX 3080 would be based on this chip. Nvidia would therefore have passed the RTX 3080 on the GA102 chip, handicapping AMD’s strategy. The target of the reds would then become the 3070, which could not offer better. This could then justify why the RTX 3070 saw its launch date pushed back by one day, just after the AMD conference. All this at lower than expected prices, to give the reds no chance.
In any case, NVIDIA’s strategy is today the source of a deep market disruption. This fool’s game is doing a lot of damage in the market and the main loser remains the end customer.
