'Puyo Puyo Tetris' Headed To Nintendo Switch And PS4 In US; Coming Spring 2017

Puyo Puyo Tetris, one of the greatest puzzle games of our generation, is finally being released in Europe and the U.S. Those already familiar with the game might be surprised by Sega’s musical chairs act with its choice of launch platforms, but at least we can look forward to seeing Puyo Puyo Tetris at U.S. retailers before the end of the year.

For the uninitiated, Puyo Puyo Tetris is pretty straightforward. The game lets players engage in rounds of Puyo Puyo, Tetris or a strange/amazing amalgamation of the two. Puyo Puyo Tetris can be played solo, in Adventure, Online or Solo Arcade modes, or in two to four player rounds of standard or modified action. Adventure mode is your standard tetronimo “campaign,” with players completing a series of stages that emphasize a variety of skills and strategies.

The online portion of Puyo Puyo Tetris also pretty self explanatory. There’s a Puzzle League that serves as the game’s competitive mode, tracking player skill and ranking community members against one another. There’s also a Free Play mode and players can even watch replays of Puyo Puyo Tetris matches. And don’t forget about the local multiplayer content.

Here’s everything Sega says we can expect when the local competition heats up:

Multiplayer Arcade – For up to four local players, Multiplayer Arcade offers a wealth of game variants that will bring out players’ competitive nature!

  • Versus – Players compete head-to-head in either Puyo Puyo or Tetris to fight in the puzzle fight of their life.
  • Swap – Players’ abilities are put to the ultimate test when they compete on both Puyo Puyo and Tetris boards, which switch back and forth at set intervals.
  • Fusion – A true hybrid game where players compete with Puyos and Tetriminos together on the same board, requiring deft, on-the-fly thinking to become victorious.
  • Big Bang – It’s a race to the finish as players compete against each other to clear unique challenge boards as quickly as possible to win.
  • Party – Players compete on Puyo or Tetris boards, but the puzzles feature special items that when activated either help players or harm their opponents.

If you aren’t familiar with Puyo Puyo Tetris, or you just want an early look at the localized version of the game, take a minute to watch the teaser trailer embedded at the top of the post. Then head down to the comments section and let us know if you’re planning to pick up a copy when the game hits PS4 and Nintendo Switch later this year. Both versions are expected sometime in spring 2017.
