Office 365 Error Message 0x8004FC12 when using Malwarebytes

 

If you have recently upgraded to Windows 10 Creators Update and experiencing frequent crashing of Office 365, check out this article for a working solution. In certain cases, following the Windows 10 upgrade it was observed that when opened, Microsoft Office 365 app kept prompting the users for activation again. However, when provided with a valid product key as the input, it displayed an error:“We’re sorry something went wrong and we can’t do this for you right now. Please try again later

Users, could not open and use any of the Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel. Microsoft has acknowledged this issue and reported it.

The problem persists with individuals running Malwarebytes antivirus program. It stopped users from saving a file locally or to a network share, displaying the following message. Also, it prohibited the users from copying a large amount of data from one file to another, or from one app to a different app (for example: copy and paste from Excel to Word) and inserting any picture from Word.

If you are troubled by this issue, try doing the following.

Disable protection for Office apps

The problem is caused by a conflict with the Anti-Exploit module within Malwarebytes Antivirus program. To remove this,

Launch Malwarebytes and choose ‘Settings tab’ visible in the left pane.

Next, click the Protection tab residing in the top pane. And select “Manage Protected Applications” option under it.

Later, in the Protected Applications window, scroll down to locate Microsoft Office PowerPoint and when found toggle to disable/turn off the protection.

Finally, click OK.

Please note that in the screenshots above, the instructions are provided for Microsoft Office PowerPoint application. However, the steps are same for all other Office application. Also, bear in mind, when you disable the protection some of the functionality of Malwarebytes will be affected but if you do not mind this, proceed further and disable the protection for Office apps.
