OneDrive Files on-Demand is now Available for Windows Insiders

Dona Sarkar announced today that OneDrive’s Files on-Demand feature starts to roll out to Windows Insiders with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

If you are on Windows 10 build 16215, you will be having this feature sometime today or over the next few days. But if you are reading this and would like to jump to it right away, you can also download and install it from here (direct download link).

Files On-Demand, aka Placeholder, is a OneDrive feature that lets you access all your files in the cloud without having them downloaded first. All your files in your OneDrive account, even online-only files, can be seen in File Explorer and work just like every other file on your computer.

You need to turn on the feature first and then have these file statuses available in File Explorer in a few moments. There are three statuses available, Online-only, Locally available files, and Always available files.

You can select which folders to be local and which ones to be File-on-Demand through OneDrive’s Settings window. You can even set all files on-Demand if you want to.

The File on-Demand feature in OneDrive is a very much missed and the #1 requested feature on OneDrive on UserVoice. So now since it’s back, let’s start testing it out and enjoy.
