Pardus 17.0 Released! Now Uses Debian 9

The development team behind the Turkish Debian-based Linux distribution, Pardus has announced the release of Pardus 17.0. The new release features the Linux kernel version 4.9 and Xfce 4.12 desktop environment.

Pardus 17.0 is a Linux distribution for Turkish-speaking users. In fact, it’s one of those few Linux distributions that are officially endorsed by governments.

From the look of things, the distribution which has been in development for the past months now seems to be based on the Debian 9 Stretch which was released last month.

Pardus 17.0 comes along with the lightweight Xfce 4.12 as a default desktop environment. It is user-friendly, visually appealing, low on resources and runs faster on older systems. Can we call it a suitable lightweight Linux distribution? Maybe.

Pre-installed Popular Applications and PXE Boot Feature

Pardus Linux 17.0

Pardus 17.0 comes in with the latest security patches and is synced with the Debian repositories. It also has applications like LibreOffice 5.2, Firefox 52.2, Thunderbird, OpenJDK 8 Java RE and VLC Media Player.

The release statement on the website said (translated):

“Enjoy the most up-to-date and stable versions of software such as Firefox, LibreOffice, Thunderbird, and VLC Media Player while your hardware works smoothly and with high performance in the Pardus operating system that comes with Linux kernel 4.9.0. “

Another prominent feature in Pardus 17.0 is the PXE (Preboot Execution Environment) boot support that you can find in the Debian Installer. This gives users the possibility of installing the operating system simultaneously on more than one device. It becomes easy when deploying the OS in a small office or in an educational institution.

The Pardus Project
