Plex Launches a Free Movies and TV Streaming Service

Plex today is launching its free ad-supported movie and tv streaming service worldwide. Here is a look at what you can expect and start watching today.

Plex, the media server and streaming solution for cord-cutters, is increasing the amount of free content on the platform. Today the company is launching its free ad-supported movie and TV streaming service worldwide. The service provides thousands of movies and TV shows from major studios like Warner Bros, Lionsgate, and more.

Plex’s Free Streaming Service

The new Plex streaming service is now live and works across all devices that support the Plex app (which is virtually everywhere). And Plex says it will use your existing media collection to make recommendations for content on the free service. The service is similar to others that offer free ad-supported content like The Roku Channel, Tubi, and others.

You can access the free content via the Plex app from the sidebar. The content will stream at up to 1080p quality and Plex will sync the progress of what you’re watching so you can pick up where you left off on other devices. Plex writes: “We wanted to offer more entertainment—both classics and new favorites—and do so in a way that is high-quality (for those who care about encoding quality) while serving only about one-third the amount of ads you’d expect on cable television.”

Since all of the content on the service is ad-supported, there is no subscription required. And you won’t need to be a Plex Pass subscriber. Anyone can view the content via the Plex app which is available on virtually every platform and device out there. Or, you can head over to the Plex website to start viewing.

But if you do subscribe to Plex Pass you get even more features including the use of Plex DVR to record OTA TV, access to streaming music through its partnership with TIDAL, and other perks.
