In honor of the game’s upcoming launch, Bethesda has released the first official demo for Prey. Players can dive into the game’s first hour of gameplay and see what’s in store in Bethesda’s latest title.
You will play as Morgan Yu, a researcher aboard Talos I studying the alien species Typhon. They’re using the data collected from the Typhon to create neuromods, which can give a person special abilities. Players decide which neuromods they want to install, but will want to be careful which ones they choose. Some of the neuromod abilities make your character less human in the process, which will have gameplay consequences. Check out Bethesda’s description of the Prey demo and the trailer below:
“What starts off as an exciting first day of work very quickly takes a dark turn. You find yourself alone on board Talos I, a lavish but abandoned interstellar research facility. Aliens have overrun the station and are hunting down any surviving crew members, including you. Should these creatures reach Earth, life as you know it will end. It’s up to you to uncover the mysteries of Talos I and safeguard the world from the Typhon threat.”
Bethesda boasts each player will have a unique experience with Prey. There’s a vast combination of neuromods and abilities to choose, which encourages multiple playthroughs. Maybe your first go-round you want to be more human? Or maybe you don’t care about saving humanity and want to become one with the Typhon instead? Some of the abilities include implanting the “mimic” trait that allows you to transform into an object like a coffee cup. It’s a great way to sneak past other Typhon. Then there are simple enhancements that will make you jump higher or run faster.
It’s up to you to unlock the mysteries of Talos I. Prey isn’t exactly an open-world game, but there are many areas you can explore. You are definitely not the lone survivor aboard this space station. You’ll encounter other characters who may know more about what happened with the escaped Typhon than you. Unfortunately, one of the side effects of implanting a neuromod is memory loss. Yu’s memory was reset at the time the implant was installed, which means she’s forced to relive the same day over and over.
And Yu’s pretty much alone in her quest for truth. Her brother, Alex Yu, is the CEO of TranStar industries, the corporation behind Talos I’s endeavors. Yu suspects her brother knew more than he’s letting on and she might be right. For all we know Alex meant to cause harm. Still, Yu can’t trust her instincts. She’ll need to follow clues to piece together her memory before she can escape the nightmare that is Talos I.
