Microsoft is due to hold a Windows Mixed Reality event today, which is likely the reason the company let slip the details of Samsung’s recently revealed Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) headset a bit early.
Named the Samsung Odyssey, the device at first glance appears to be a now standard WMR headset, but the leaked specs suggest a somewhat higher end device.
For one, the screen has a 2880 x 1600 resolution, slightly higher than the standard 1440 x 1440 screen per eye in the other devices. The screen is also OLED, which makes for much better contrast levels than the LED screens in the cheaper devices, and offers 110 degree field of view. The headset also features built-in headphones and dual-array mikes but still lets you plug in your own headphones.
All of these specs will cost you, however, with the headset set to retail for a pricy $499, setting a new high water mark for WMR headsets.
They do however come with controllers, which only soften’s the blow slightly.
Microsoft is likely to unveil the device today, but unlike many of the WMR headsets, which are expected to be available on the 17th October, the Samsung Odyssey will only arrive on the 6th November 2017. Of note is that the headset appears as if it will be on sale in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, and Germany, if Microsoft’s fine print is anything to go by.
