Samsung Galaxy S8 Lite With Qualcomm 840 CPU Surfaced In Benchmarks

The Samsung Galaxy S8 might be getting a sibling soon, after a device with the model number SM-G9600 was spotted in Geekbench benchmarks Wednesday.

The device might be the Samsung Galaxy S8 Lite.

A ‘lite’ version of the Samsung Galaxy S8 might be in the works, although it might be alternatively called the Samsung Galaxy S8 Mini. According to the benchmarks, the device will come with a quad-core processor clocked at 1.77 GHz.

Another fact revealed in the benchmarks is the codename of the motherboard used in the device — sdm840, which hints at the use of Qualcomm Snapdragon 840 processor.

Since it is clocked at 1.77 GHz, unlike the Galaxy S8, which is clocked at around 4GHz, the processor might not be as powerful as the Galaxy S8’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, which is based on 10nm processor technology. It might be an upgraded version of the Snapdragon 820 processor, which was used in many mid-range handsets such as the Lenovo Z2 Plus and the OnePlus 3 in the past.

The RAM though remains the same as the Galaxy S8 at 4GB. The device also runs Android 7.1.2 — Nougat OS, which is the same operating system as the one on the S8 currently. Since it doesn’t seem to come with the new Android operating system— Android O, expected to be launched in September, chances are the device might be launched by next month.

The SM-G9600 scored 1782 in single-core tests and 4212 in multi-core tests, which makes it comparable to the Galaxy S8 Plus in single core tests, but lagging behind in multi-core tests.

Samsung previously launched a ‘Mini’ version for the Galaxy S5, but did not launch one for the Galaxy S6 or S7.

Mini versions are usually, as the name indicates, smaller versions of the flagship handset. Going by the specs of the Galaxy S5 Mini, the S8 Mini might have a 4.5-inch HD display, or Samsung could opt for a full HD display like the one S7 Mini was supposed to have before it was cancelled. Whatever be the case, it might not match up to the S8’s 1440x2960p display. Chances are that the smaller handset might not have the S8’s highlight — an edge-to-edge display.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Lite might just be a downgraded version of the S8, without some of its high-end features. but it might have the same software as the flagship handset. The device might come with the same TouchWiz user interface as the Galaxy S8 and would be eligible for a future Android O update. Most importantly, it would come with Samsung’s artificial intelligence-based voice assistant Bixby, which comes with features such as Bixby Vision, which can scan objects using the device’s camera and provide the user information about them.
