Sharp’s Aquos S2 Bezel-Free 4K UHD Phone Leaks And Launch Date

A 3D render depicting what seems to be the alleged Sharp Aquos S2 emerged earlier this week on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo, alongside some specifications of Sharp’s newest high-end phone.

At the end of last year, Sharp and Xiaomi presented two bezel-less smartphones, the Aquos and the Mi Mix, respectively. Sharp became the first manufacturer to launch a device with a design presenting extremely narrow bezels, which allows more room for the screen; something that has become a trend with most major phone makers recently. Now the Japanese giant is back with an apparently entirely bezel-free screen.

According to the leak, the Sharp Aquos S2 (105 Limited Edition) will feature a 5.5-inch display with 4K resolution and an aspect ratio of 18:9, with practically no bezels. As for photo chops, the device is expected to come with a 12MP + 8MP dual rear camera dual rear camera. As you can see from the images in this post, some of which come from a Twitter source, the supposed S2 looks good, but we certainly hope it comes with multiple color options.

One mysterious thing though is that the phone seems to lack a fingerprint sensor, which suggests that Sharp might have managed to embed fingerprint sensors into mobile display panels, but this is somewhat dubious seeing as how not even bigger phone manufacturers like Samsung and Apple have implemented this technology.

Another leak revealed that the Aquos S2 will feature either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 or a Snapdragon 630 processor, either 4GB or 64GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage. The article also claims that Sharp’s new phone will be priced at $400 and $520 for its two variants.

Needless to say, Sharp hasn’t officially confirmed anything related to this rumors, but the company has indeed confirmed the launch event of the Aquos S2 in Beijing on August 8. So, we only have to wait a few weeks to get a complete look at the Sharp Aquos S2 and confirm how much of the above pans out. If the Aquos S2 does indeed get unveiled with a genuine 4K UHD display, this will make it one of only a tiny handful of smartphones to include this technology. The only other models currently actually being old with 4K displays are Sony’s 2015 Xperia Z5 Premium and 2017 XZ Premium models, the latter of which also features HDR in a screen that’s more like an ultra-compressed version of those in Sony’s famous 4K HDR TVs.
