Spotify may soon introduce a trim silence feature for podcasts

Spotify has made its intentions clear to become the number one platform for podcasts. But to be number one, you have to offer features that make your platform easy to use, and Spotify appears to be adding a quality-of-life feature that could draw in a bigger audience.

Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane), who frequently digs into the code of apps, discovered that Spotify is planning to add a “trim silence” feature for removing moments of silence in podcasts. Many of the most popular podcast apps offer a “trim silence” option, so this is by no means new, but it’s nice for Spotify to offer the feature directly in its service.

Over the past several months, Spotify has been aggressive about its ambitions to become a leader in the world of podcasts. The music streaming service paid $100 million to acquire Anchor, which has already reportedly led to a big increase in listening numbers. The company also signed an exclusive deal with Joe Rogan, who is one of the industry’s most popular personalities.

Spotify has the platform and is continuing to grow its audience. Now, it’s a matter of the service refining its product to provide listeners with a better experience. Adding a “trim silence” option may seem like a small thing, but it’s important for Spotify to make these changes to make its platform better to use.

It’s unclear when Spotify will release the trim silence feature for everyone. But if it’s already being discovered as in the works, it’s possible it’ll show up relatively soon.

Incidentally, Jane recently uncovered evidence that Spotify is working on on-device local files support for Android. That means you will no longer need to sync your library from your desktop anymore. Once that feature rolls out, you will be able to head over to the app settings and turn on a new toggle under the import section. Spotify will then scan your device’s internal storage for saved audio files and list them within the Your Library section on the app.
