EIZO Unveils New DCI 4K ColorEdge Prominence CG3145 31-Inch Monitor

4K HDR monitors are becoming a serious new thing in the world of professional and consumer PC users both and while a pile of new offerings are coming to the market in 2017 with HDR color specs, wide color gamut, enhanced contrast range and HDR standards compliance, we can probably assume that EIZO’s new DCI-4K Prominence HDR monitor will give many models a run for their money in terms of specs.

The new ColorEdge Prominence CG3145 31 inch 4K HDR monitor was announced today by EIZO as a professional reference monitor release for post-production workflow needs that also have HDR video requirements built into them. Unlime many 4K monitors, the Prominence CG3145 is not a 4K ultra HD model but instead offers full DCI 4K resolution at 4096 x 2160 pixels.

The crucial aspects of HDR display and formatting for both screens and content are enhanced range of contrast for higher brightness to black depth levels and deeper, richer more expansive color representation in video sources. Through these two broad areas of video formatting improvement, HDR mastering allows for digital video sources to more closely imitate the way in which human eyes perceive the world in real life. HDR monitors and displays of any kind cover both expanded color and expanded contrast range as a result.

On both fronts, the EIZO ColorEdge CG3145 is built to really deliver the goods according to its manufacturer. This monitor can “correctly” display both extremely bright and extremely dark content while keeping both clean and detailed. A the same time, the CG3145 offers up greatly expanded color gamut and 10-bit color delivery for a range of 1.07 billion RGB (red, green blue) color values and consequently higher color vibrancy and accuracy.

Specifically, the ColorEdge CG3145 can deliver a stunning 1000 nits of peak brightness on its 31 inch display while also offering up deep, rich locally dimmed blacks for a native contrast ratio that sits well above the average for an IPS monitor (which the CG3145 is). Thus the name “Prominence” in the this EIZO monitor. With these contrast specs alone, the Prominence monitor can cleanly and accurately represent HDR video sources for post-production workflows. However, the list of useful features in the EIZO Prominence doesn’t stop with its display specs.

The ColorEdge CG3145 also comes with key tools for making sure that the best possible visual brightness and contrast detail can be displayed for a particular piece of HDR production video. Specifically, the CG3145 removes the common problems caused in many HDR 4K monitors by ABL and local dimming combinations which serve to limit maximum possible display brightness for the sake of prolonging a monitor’s functional lifetime. In the CG3145, ABL can be kept deactivated while local dimming for specific bright objects is maximized for the as much elimination of backlight halo around brightly lit sections of display due to backlight bleed-through. In other words, HDR contrast precision in the ColorEdge CG3145 is kept as high as possible and with little to no backlight halo effect across this monitor’s 31 inch screen. This combined with the full deliver of a 1000 nit peak brightness ensures some highly uncommon bright object prominence against a deeply black background in this particular monitor.

The EIZO ColorEdge also comes with support for two complementary HDR video creation gamma curves. The first of these is the new HLG (hybrid log gamma) broadcast 4K HDR content standard and the second is called the PQ (perceptual quantization) curve. The HLG standard is designed for television broadcast high dynamic range while PQ is designed to approximate human visual perception of light and color, which is ideal for movies, streamed documentaries and assorted other high quality digital consumer content. The presence of HLG and PQ support in the EIZO Prominence CG3145 means reliable handling of industry standards for broadcast and other HDR video according to EIZO’s own press release on the CG3145.

It’s also worth noting that the Prominence CG3145 comes with support for assorted video formats through its HDMI and DisplayPort ports. These include 10-bit 4:2:2 at 50/60p via HDMI and 10-bit 4:4:4 at 50/60p via DP.

Some additional features that come with the EIZO Prominence CG3145 for maximal HDR color support include 98% display representation of the DCI-P3 Wide Color Gamt space and smooth gradations between RGB color values through native 10-bit color display from a 24-bit LUT. EIZO has also thrown in a light shielding hood for minimization of ambient glare against the CG3145’s display during studio workflows.

EIZO hasn’t yet released pricing or specific availability information for the ColorEdge Prominence CG3145 professional HDR DCI 4K workflow monitor but we do know that the company will showcasing this powerful new piece of pro display technology at the NAB Show 2017 in Las Vegas between April 24th and April 27th at booth SL13916, along with other display and video pro products that they’re releasing this year.
