The RTX 4090 Is a Great GPU. Here’s Why No One Should Buy It

NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 is a $1600 GPU that will absolutely smash any real-world workload you throw at it. It’s indisputably packed with clever tech and absurd levels of raw power. However, even if you have the money, you probably shouldn’t buy one. The Problem With “Halo” Products The “halo” effect is when positive perceptions of one aspect of something bleed into other aspects of it. It happens in all areas of life, but when we’re talking about brands and products it can have a real effect on how customers perceive a product. Nvidia thinks RTX 4090 cables melted because they weren’t fully plugged in

Weeks after Nvidia announced that it was investigating reports that the power cables for its RTX 4090 graphics card were melting and burning, the company says it may know why: they just weren’t plugged in all the way. In a post to its customer support forum on Friday, Nvidia says that it’s still investigating the reports, but that its findings “suggest” an insecure connector has been a common issue. It also says that it’s gotten around 50 reports of the issue. Nvidia’s flagship card uses what’s known as a 12VHPWR power connector, a new standard that isn’t natively supported by most of the power supplies that people already have in […]

Nvidia's smoldering RTX 4090 power connector labeled a 'disaster'

Investigation into overheating Nvidia RTX 4090 power connectors has found that one supplier is particularly problematic and is a "complete disaster". There's been something of an undercurrent of issues for the power-hungry RTX 4090 with Nvidia dealing with power connectors that like to get altogether too hot and then melt. Now, one report has come to the conclusion that the troublesome 12VHPWR connector is built by one of two different companies. Those companies are NTK and Astron, with the latter one being the hot one and labeled a "complete disaster". Igor from German tech site Igor’s Lab believes that some particular connectors built by Astron aren't as well soldered as […]
