Adding a user account in Windows 10
Before Windows 10, adding a user was easy: You went into settings, typed in a name and set some permissions, and you were done.Not anymore! Now Windows 10 wants to know who you are so it can track you and make suggestions and sell you stuff. Luckily, you still have some control, and a few choices. Here’s what to expect when you add a user. I’m assuming you’re an Admin on your PC like I am on this one. Click the Windows Start icon, click Settings, then Accounts. Choose Family and other users. Adding a family member gives you and other adult family members some control over children in the family. We’ll cover adults here. Click Add a family member, and in the next dialog box, choose Add an adult. Type it in their Microsoft Account email address here. Hit Next and confirm you want to add them. Now they’ll be sent an email inviting them to join the family. Even before they accept, you can do a few things to their account. You’ll see their email address show up in your family list. Click the email address to change their account type from Standard to Administrator—obviously, don’t give them the latter unless you really trust them. You can even Block this user if they’ve lost their privileges on this PC. Here’s the sad part: If you don’t want to use a Microsoft account for a family member’s user account, you can’t sign them up as Family. You have to go to Other users, like they’re someone you met on the street, and set up a local account that will work on this PC only. Windows 10 will ask for an email address or phone number for the user to sign in. Say you don’t have that, and in the next screen it’ll want you to make an account, and you’ll have to say NO again, like it’s wrong not to have a Microsoft account! So then it’s going to give up and let you set up a name and password. Finally, here’s the local user account, which you can remove anytime you want. What else do you want to know about Windows 10?
