Western Digital at FMS 2020: Zoned SSDs, Automotive NVMe And More

At Flash Memory Summit this week (online for the first time), Western Digital is showing off three new SSD products and have outlined the company's areas of strategic focus in a keynote presentation. First up, Western Digital is commercializing NVMe Zoned Namespaces (ZNS) technology with the new Ultrastar DC ZN540 datacenter SSD. We covered ZNS in depth earlier this year after the extension to the NVMe standard was ratified. SanDisk Launches SD and microSD for Industrial and Automotive: Extreme Temps, Upped Reliability

Western Digital has introduced its new SanDisk Automotive and SanDisk Industrial memory cards for specialized applications. The new cards can work in extreme temperatures for prolonged amounts of time, integrate health status monitor capability, special data retention mechanisms, and some are compliant with the AEC-Q100 Grade 3 standard. In addition, the cards are substantially faster than their predecessors are, thus enabling Western Digital to offer them for emerging applications, such as surveying commercial drones and automotive dash cameras. Samsung to Use SiFive RISC-V Cores for SoCs, Automotive, 5G Applications

At the annual RISC-V Summit this week, Samsung disclosed the use SiFive’s RISC-V cores for upcoming chips for a variety of applications. The company is joining a growing list of leading high-tech companies that have adopted the RISC-V architecture. One of the applications that Samsung is using RISC-V cores in is mmWave RF processing by its upcoming 5G RF front-end modules.
