Microsoft Edge’s feature to share files between Windows 11, Mac, Android is getting even better

For the past several months, Microsoft has been working on ‘Drop’ feature for its Chromium Edge, the default browser on Windows 11 and Windows 10. This tool was first added to the browser in May and it was recently updated in the Canary channel with another help addition – screenshot integration. Microsoft Edge’s ‘Drop’ feature lives on the browser’s right sidebar which also houses shortcuts to services like Apple Music, WhatsApp, Messenger and more. Drop interface is similar to a messaging service, but the files shared in the ‘drop’ panel are only accessible across your devices. In other words, you can send messages to yourself only (imagine Telegram’s cross-platform and...

Microsoft Edge’s new sidebar on Windows is getting better in the next update

Microsoft has been working on a new sidebar for the Chromium-based Edge browser and it’s about to get more productive, thanks to a new update in the works. As you’re probably aware, the Microsoft Edge sidebar lets you access Edge features side-by-side. This includes features like Outlook, Office, Games, and more. Microsoft Edge’s sidebar is helpful, but many users also view it as yet another bloatware in the browser. Thankfully, it is possible to hide the sidebar. If you like the sidebar feature, we have some good news for you. The company is now working on ‘favourites’ integration for the sidebar. As you can see in the below screenshot, Microsoft...

Microsoft Edge’s new Windows 11 design released – here’s how to enable it

The latest update means Windows 11 is set to benefit from a bit more visual sparkle as Microsoft Edge 102 apparently brings the experimental ‘Mica’ effect to more areas in the web browser. While Mica or Fluent Design is nowhere to be seen in Chrome, Microsoft Edge continues to benefit from it. For the uninitiated, Windows 11’s Mica theme is an opaque effect that’s applied to windows or title bars. You can see the desktop wallpaper through an app using Mica and it looks really nice if implemented properly. It’s a fancy translucent effect, but the difference is subtle and the impact on performance is minimal. If you’re on Windows...

Hands on with Microsoft Edge’s new sidebar on Windows with Bing, Office integration

Microsoft Edge’s new Sidebar menu is now rolling out to select users in the browser’s Canary channel, allowing users to search the web on Bing without opening a new tab, access tools like Calculator, read emails on Outlook, and browser MSN games without navigating away from the current page. Edge’s new sidebar is similar to Vivaldi’s web panel and it’s particularly useful when you’re reading a page, but you need to perform an additional task. For example, you may need to launch Windows Calculator or check your internet speed if a particular website is not responding. With Edge’s sidebar, you can access features like Bing search, Discover (a new way...

Microsoft Edge’s sleeping tabs can now save even more resources

Microsoft has made some improvements to the sleeping tabs features in its Edge browser, saving even more of your PC’s resources. With version 100 of Microsoft Edge, more of your tabs can be put to sleep, plus you can now visualize the resources you’re saving by using them. For starters, Microsoft has made a change to the way tabs can be put to sleep. Originally, tabs wouldn’t be put to sleep if the page was sharing a browsing instance with another page, which appeared to be a deliberate decision. However, that’s no longer the case, so even if one of your background tabs is sharing a browsing instance with another...

Workspaces is Microsoft Edge’s take on Chrome Tab Groups and it might return soon

The Canary builds of Microsoft Edge are where you tend to find new features to try. Edge Canary is updated with experimental features and there are certain features that would quietly disappear from the browser without any official acknowledgement. This is precisely what happened with Edge’s experimental ‘Workspaces’ feature which appeared in 2021. Microsoft developers have been working on a new feature ‘Workspaces’ for Microsoft Edge since early 2021. Like Google’s Tab Groups, Microsoft Edge’s Workspaces is a great way to maintain groups of work, entertainment or personal browser tabs. It aims to eliminate the clutter in the browser and help users who are trying to balance work and personal...

Microsoft Edge’s new tab page shows Bing’s video of the day, and here is how to enable it

It’s not often that Microsoft forgets to mention a new feature that it adds to its browsers, but it looks like the company forgot to highlight an important feature in the new tab page of the Microsoft Edge browser. But thanks to YouTuber BrenTech, who discovered the feature back in October 2021, Edge users just got an opportunity to enable the “Image or video of the day” option on Edge’s new tab page. As the name suggests, it’ll play Bing’s video of the day in a loop on the new tab page when the option is enabled. You can pause the video by pressing a pause button when you don’t...

Microsoft Edge’s experimental feature lets you add passwords manually

Microsoft is working on a new version of Edge’s built-in password manager with support for an option that will let you add passwords manually. At the moment, if you want to save passwords in Edge, you need to visit a new site, type your password and then add it to the browser when prompted. With Edge’s upcoming password manager update, you can add passwords manually. As a result, you don’t need to visit new sites or enter passwords or import passwords from another browser. It’s worth noting that the feature was first added to Chrome Canary and Microsoft’s implementation seems to be based on the work done by Google engineers....

How to turn off Microsoft Edge’s new Startup Boost feature

The next Microsoft Edge update will introduce a new feature that is called Startup Boost. We reviewed the feature when it was introduced in Microsoft Edge Canary back in October 2020. Startup Boost aims to speed up the launch of the Microsoft Edge web browser on Windows devices. Basically, what the feature does is load core Microsoft Edge processes in the background on system start. Not a new concept, but Microsoft notes that it will give the opening of Microsoft Edge on sign-in of a user or after closing the browser completely a significant boost. Edge users benefit from the feature, especially since it does not cost a lot of...

Microsoft expands Edge’s text-selection mini-menu to regular pages in Edge Canary

Microsoft has a mini-menu with useful commands available when you select text in Edge, but till now the feature was only available when viewing PDFs. In the latest version of Edge Canary, the feature is now also available on regular web pages. The mini-menu contains useful features such as a dictionary look-up. It can however also be annoying if you are one of those people who read web pages by highlighting the text. Fortunately the same menu lets you disable the feature per web page. Your list of blocked pages are stored on Settings, and you can later go back and un-select those. The feature is in the latest Edge...
