Switching from a familiar operating system can cause some anxiety. If you’ve used macOS most of your life, you might be a bit hesitant about making the move to a new Chromebook. More often, users are choosing Chromebooks over Macs due to the lower cost of hardware. In fact, you can buy a high-end Chromebook for around $1,000, often less than even the cheapest Mac devices. It’s a great move if you want to save some cash, but the switch will require minor adjustments to your workflow. File management, keyboard shortcuts, and app installation all work a bit differently on a ChromeOS device. Luckily, we’ve got you covered with...

Samsung Galaxy Z Slide concept, designed by LetsGoDigitalSource: Pocketnow, renders by LetsGoDigital Foldable smartphones are slowly taking off, and while Samsung is the king of the entire market, it’s worth noting that there are many other players trying to compete and grab some market share. Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, TCL, and Motorola have all announced foldable smartphones in recent months and years, and while they’re impressive, none of them are as widely available as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 devices. The foldable smartphone business is competitive; however, Samsung seemingly has no competition in the West and in Europe. None of the aforementioned companies are selling...

When Microsoft released the KB5012643 update for Windows 11, there were complaints from a number of users about screen flicker when booting into Safe Mode. Microsoft acknowledged the problem, and confirmed suspicions that it was related to Safe Mode with Networking. The company has now addressed the issue, fixing it with a relatively rare KIR (Known Issue Rollback). When the issue was first discovered, Microsoft warned: “After installing KB5012643, devices starting in Safe Mode might show a flickering screen. Components that rely on Explorer.exe, such as File Explorer, Start Menu, and Taskbar, can be affected and appear unstable”. The company gave further details, saying: Devices experiencing this issue can log...

If your device has memory problems, you can find out using this built-in memory diagnostic tool on Windows 11. On Windows 11, if the computer is running sluggish and apps are crashing, or the system experiences a random Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), freezes, or reboots, the first thing you should check would be the memory to discard a problem with any of the modules. This is not only because memory issues can make the device unstable, but also because it could cause data corruption and other errors. If you suspect the problem is related to the system memory, you can use the “Windows Memory Diagnostic,” a legacy tool that...

The latest update for Windows 11 is a big one — and we’re not just talking about the size of the download. The update in question is KB5010414, and it’s something we have already touched on a couple of times. Much of the focus has been, entirely understandably, on the new features the update brings; KB5010414 is about much more than this. Yes, the arrival of support for Android apps is nice, but it’s certainly not something everyone is interested in. What is more impressive and interesting about the KB5010414 is the laundry list of changes, tweaks and fixes Microsoft has introduced. This is what makes this the most significant...

It is a few weeks since Microsoft released the KB5000842 update for Windows 10, and it wasn’t long before the optional patch was linked to problems with game performance. These particular issues have been — mostly — resolved, but KB5000842 remains problematic with users of some 5.1 audio setups complaining that it has results in their computers emitting high-pitched noises. For now, there is no proper fix, but Microsoft is investigating the problem and say that an update will be provided in a future release. In the meantime, the company offers up a workaround. The cause of the audio issues has not been revealed, but it is something that is...

Earlier this week we asked — slightly tongue-in-cheek — what problems would be caused by this month’s Patch Tuesday updates. As the weekend crests the horizon, we have our answer, and this time around it is the Edge-killing KB5001330 update that is proving problematic. And the problems appear to be not only plentiful, but also fairly significant. Among the reported issues are a drop in the performance of games, error messages, screen flicker and more. As reported by Ghacks, many complaints can be found online in Microsoft’s support forum and message boards, with Windows 10 users reporting various problems following the installation of the update. Some people have been plagued...

These days, it is almost a given that an update for Windows 10 will not only fix bugs and introduce new options, it is also likely to cause additional problems. It is something that Windows users have been painfully aware of for some time, and Microsoft has been working on a solution. And that solution is KIR, or Known Issue Rollback. The new system enables Microsoft to rollback changes introduced by problematic patches rolled out through Windows Update. KIR only applies to non-security updates. Writing on the Windows IT Pro blog, Microsoft’s Eric Vernon and Vatsan Madhavan explain: “Known Issue Rollback is an important Windows servicing improvement to support non-security...
