The name and approximate release date of Linux Mint 19 have been revealed.
The next major release of the popular Ubuntu-based Linux operating system will be called Linux Mint 19 “Tara”.
Yes, Tara. The codename is firmly in keeping with other Linux Mint releases, all of which use female forenames.
Alongside the name we also know a bit more about what the new features Linux Mint 19 will include, plus a rough idea of when it will be released.
New Features in Linux Mint 19
As expected, Linux Mint 19 will be based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. This gives the Linux Mint team a modern yet solid foundation on which to build. It also means Linux Mint 19 will get critical security fixes until 2023.
Another big change is that the Linux Mint 19.x series will use GTK 3.22.
Why does that matter? Well, for one, it means you will finally be able to use modern GTK themes with the Cinnamon desktop, free of quirks or issues. Plus, as GTK 3.22 is a stable release with a stable API, the update means a number of third-party apps will once again work on Mint.
There’ll be updated versions of the GTK-based Cinnamon desktop environment, and improvements to the default Mint-Y GTK and icon themes.
Linux Mint 19 will have better HIDPI support.
Previous versions of Linux Mint have introduced new apps, so it’s possible that we’ll see some more in this release.

- Nemo is getting full-text search
- Mint Update improvements

According to the Linux Mint roadmap Linux Mint 19 will be released May/June 2018.
