VidCutter, the open-source video trimmer app we mentioned back in January, is back with a new release — and it’s a big one.

The cross-platform Qt5 app lets you quickly and easily trim, split and join video clips without needing to re-encode.
VidCutter 3.0 sees a complete rewrite of the multimedia backend, which now uses libmpv for viewing viewing. The app previously used ffmpeg to power its backend.
The switch brings gives VidCutter new features, like frame stepping for more accurate cuts and hardware accelerated video (depending on your own setup), and shortens the list of dependencies the app requires to run.
VidCutter’s main toolbar has been redesigned, a new menu option makes keyboard shortcuts discoverable, and error reports are now logged.
Install VidCutter 3.0 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS +
As before you can install VidCutter on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and above by adding the VidCutter PPA to your software sources. The quickest, easiest way to do this is from the command line, with the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ozmartian/apps
sudo apt update && sudo apt install vidcutter
If PPAs aren’t your thing, or you’re not running an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution, you can download a distro-agnostic VidCutter 3.0 .appimage from Github, which is where you’ll also find macOS and Windows installers too.
