Verizon customers: Have your video streams been noticeably blurrier as of late? The carrier just introduced a new option that can help fix that, for a price.
As CNET first reported, Verizon is bringing back full-quality video streams. The move comes after Verizon in August started capping smartphone video streams at 720p.
It’ll cost you an extra $10 per month, but you’ll be able to stream video to your phone over 4G LTE at its original definition. The new Premium Streaming option will be available starting Nov. 3, a Verizon spokeswoman confirmed to PCMag.
With Premium Streaming “video is delivered in its original definition, up to 4K,” but what you see will depend on your phone’s capabilities, the spokeswoman said. Also keep in mind that streaming 4K video over a cellular connection will likely eat through your data pretty quickly.
But, if you absolutely must have that super-crisp video, just head over to a Verizon store or give the company a call to add this new Premium Streaming feature to your account. The feature can be added to smartphones on any current Verizon plan, with the exception of Go Unlimited and prepaid.
As we previously reported, the video throttling rules Verizon put into effect this summer—720p video streams on phones and 1080p on tablets—affect all customers, not just those on an unlimited plan.
“We’re doing this to ensure all customers have a great experience on our network since there is no visible difference in quality on a smartphone or tablet when video is shown at higher resolutions (than 720p on phones and 1080p on tablets),” Verizon told The Verge at the time.
