What is Amazon Fresh and how does it work?

What is Amazon Fresh?

Amazon Fresh is a grocery delivery service offered by Amazon. You can buy most major brands of staples, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat –anything a traditional brick-and-mortar grocery store would offer. The groceries are delivered to you, often the same day, and delivery is free over a certain order size. Amazon has also begun opening physical Amazon Fresh stores in major cities, and also offers delivery from Whole Foods, if there is one in your area.

How does it work?

Just go to Amazon Fresh and order as you usually would from Amazon. Your existing Amazon login and password will work, or you can set up a new account if you don’t have one. Keep in mind that, unless you are paying via a SNAP EBT or P-EBT card, you have to be a Prime member to use Amazon Fresh. Another Prime member can let you share their membership in order to use Fresh.

Then just shop for what you need. Most major brands are available, and Amazon also has a “store brand” for many staples. The site is organized very much like the main Amazon site; if you don’t see what you want, the search box is right at the top. When you finish shopping and go to your shopping cart, Amazon will tell you if you qualify for free shipping. Delivery is free as long as your order is large enough (either $35 or $50, depending on the area), and you select the standard two-hour delivery window. If you want a more precise one-hour window, a delivery charge will be added based on your order total.

Continue from here to add your payment information and place your order. (You will see an option to tip your delivery person; according to Amazon, the entire tip goes to the delivery person.) When it arrives, you can sign for your delivery or, under the right circumstances, have it dropped off for you. (The drop-off point must be secure and accessible; dropping off with building staff is OK.) While the COVID pandemic persists, contactless drop-off may be the only option available. Pickup is also available in some places, but again, check the site for availability in your city. In locations with a Whole Foods, Amazon also offers delivery from there, but keep in mind that there is a service fee added to Whole Foods deliveries through Amazon.

Where is Amazon Fresh available?

It is important to remember that Amazon Fresh is not available everywhere. Fresh is available in 19 major cities in the US, and several cities in Europe. It is not available in Canada. You can visit Amazon.com/Fresh that will tell you if your location is eligible.

FAQs

Does Amazon Fresh take EBT?

Yes, Amazon accepts SNAP EBT and P-EBT in every state except Alaska and Hawaii. If you register your EBT card with Amazon Fresh, you will be able to use the service without being a Prime member.

What day does Amazon Fresh restock?

Amazon generally restocks completely in 30 days. If a common item is out of stock, check back in 2-3 days, or ask for a notification when it comes back in stock.

Do you have to tip for Amazon Fresh?

No, you do not have to tip. It is optional. If you leave a tip, you can change the amount of it within 24 hours of placing your order. Your delivery person does not know which customers tip or how much.
