Xiaomi and OPPO Could Get Their Own 3D Sensors to Challenge Apple’s iPhone X Next Year

Xiaomi OPPO 3D senors Face ID

iPhone X’s Face ID scanner has encouraged Android smartphone manufacturers to switch over to facial recognition. The next two players in the industry are OPPO and Xiaomi and they are expected to launch high-end phones with 3D sensing solutions next year.

Huawei Also Reportedly Making Its Own 3D Sensing Solution Alongside Xiaomi and OPPO to Heat up Competition Against Apple

Himax Technologies in cooperation with Qualcomm are aiming to make 3D sensing modules for both OPPO and Xiaomi. Side by side, the sensor modules are going to be produced by Truly Opto-Electronics, according to industry sources.

Unfortunately, one analyst was keen to point out that Apple’s TrueDepth camera is 2.5 years ahead of the competition technology-wise. We will see what sort of solutions are present in devices from Huawei, OPPO, and Xiaomi but for the time being, we will have to take the word of Ming-Chi Kuo. The partnership of Qualcomm, Himax and Truly Opto-Electronics will allow volume production to start from March-April 2018 at the earliest.

As for Huawei, the Chinese tech giant has reportedly entered into an agreement with another Chinese company called Sunny Optical Technology. The manufacturer will develop 3D sensor solutions, but these upgrades are only going to be found inside Huawei’s flagship models.

If the production volume is going to start during the second quarter of 2018, then we fear that Xiaomi’s Mi7 might not get this upgrade. Instead, we will have to wait on the Mi MIX 3 to feature a 3D sensing solution since the Chinese phone maker will be aiming to further reduce the bezels on this device.

At the same time, we could be seeing an end to the fingerprint readers on some phones but this will depend on how accurate and secure Android-based 3D sensing solutions happen to be.

Do you think 3D sensing solutions are going to feature improved security in devices from Huawei, OPPO, and Xiaomi?
