Xiaomi Introduces Mi Air Charge Technology – From Science Fiction to Reality

January 30, 2021 by jerry23

There must have been a point in your life where you would have got frustrated with all those wires and so-called wireless charging stands and would have thought about how cool it would have been to charge your devices without any wires or those charging stands, anywhere, anytime. Well, Xiaomi is here with its’ new “remote charging technology” called Mi Air Charge, which can charge multiple devices simultaneously without the need for cables or a wireless charging stand.

Xiaomi’s “Wireless” Wireless Charging

According to Xiaomi, its new “remote charging technology” can charge a smartphone that’s being used “while walking around or even when something’s in the way.

Wireless charging has been there for quite some time now, but it required a Qi wireless charging stand, using which you can charge your smartphone or wearables. Still, it couldn’t be termed as a true wireless charging technology since it requires close contact between the charging coils inside the charging pad and wireless, but it did eliminate the wire.

In comparison, true wireless charging should be something like wireless communication, happening over the air and covering long distances in ideal terms. Several researchers have tried their hands on it, but no one found any success. In contrast, Xiaomi seems to have some breakthrough, enough to reveal it publicly.

We’re excited to bring you the remote charging technology – Mi Air Charge Technology! Charge multiple devices simultaneously while you’re gaming, walking around, or even when something’s in the way, no strings attached. Another giant leap forward in wireless charging technology!

So How Does Mi Air Charge Works?

Xiaomi Mi Air

Mi Air Charge is developed on the concept of space positioning and energy transmission. It uses a transmitter or charging pile with built-in five-phase interference antennas that can detect your device’s precise location within milliseconds, after which 144 other antennas transmit millimeter-wide waves directly towards your phone using beamforming.

One thing to note is that the charging using Mi Air Charge is currently limited to 5W.

While on the smartphone’s end, an array of 14 antennas converts the millimeter-wave signal emitted by the transmitter into electric energy, in turn charging your smartphone.

According to Xiaomi, the Mi Air will be compatible with a wide range of products in the coming future, including wearables and other smart devices. The future Xiaomi products will be built upon a wireless power supply design our ecosystem truly wireless.

Well, if this succeeds, then it will be a revolutionary technology for sure. But for now, it seems like Xiaomi has just gotten an edge over the other OEMs with its Mi Air Charge, but it would be interesting to see where it will be going forward in the future. As for now, it won’t be coming to the consumer products anytime soon, so we might have to wait for a year or two before concluding anything.
