Apple is making a significant change in the process of how your email and Apple ID work. From today, you can now change your Apple ID from a third-party service to an Apple’s domain. For instance, if you have an Apple ID account associated with your Gmail or Yahoo account, now you have the ability to change it to iCloud. We’ll share more details on it later on. So let’s dive in to see how you can make the switch from your third-party email to Apple’s domain.
Apple IDs With Third-Party Email Can Now Be Updated With Apple’s Domain
Before today, users only had the ability to change their Apple ID email from one third-party email service to another. This means that if you had an Apple ID associated with your Gmail account, you had the ability to change it to Yahoo address and vice versa. What you could not do was to change an email of third-party service to that of Apple’s domain.
Apple in its updated support document says that users can now make the shift. The company details that if you have an Apple ID associated with a Gmail account or Yahoo account, you can switch it to an @me.com, @iCloud.com, or @mac.com account.
In addition to this, Apple also outlines the necessary steps that you must take in order to make the switch. So if you’re interested, we will tell you the step by step instructions. As to begin with, Apple notes that in order to make the switch, a user must first sign out of “every Apple service and device that uses your Apple ID” before changing the email address associated with your account. Once you do that, follow the steps provided to you, as shared by Apple.
Use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
- Go to Settings > [your name] > Name, Phone Numbers, Email.
- Next to Reachable At, tap Edit, then delete your current Apple ID.
- Tap Continue. Enter the Apple ID that you want to use.
- Tap Next.
Use your Apple ID account page
- Go to appleid.apple.com and sign in.
- In the Account section, click Edit.
- Under your Apple ID, click Change Apple ID.
- Enter the Apple ID that you want to use.
- Click Continue.
However, as a disclaimer shared by Apple, once you opt to use an Apple domain, you can not revert the change. You’re basically stuck with the new domain. So if you have a Gmail or Yahoo account associated with your Apple account, you now have the option to change it to Apple’s domain.
Even though the feature is now available, some users report that they are unable to change their Apple IDs. At this point, it is possible that the new feature is not yet available in many regions. There will be more to the story, so be sure to stay tuned in for more.
