Microsoft announces significant price reduction of Azure HDInsight analytics service

Microsoft last week announced significant price reduction of Azure HDInsight analytics service. Azure HDInsight is a fully managed, open source analytics service for enterprises enabling cost-effective way to process massive amounts of data in the case of scenarios like data warehousing, machine learning, IoT and more. It supports open-source frameworks such as Hadoop, Spark, Hive, LLAP, Kafka, Storm, R, and more. Read about price reduction details below.

  • Up to 52% price reduction in Azure HDInsight: Microsoft will also be replacing the Premium cluster tier with the Enterprise Security Package that can be added to your Azure HDInsight cluster. Enterprise Security Package will still be in preview. The price reduction becomes effective on January 5, 2018.
  • Additional 80% price reduction for R Server for Azure HDInsight. This reduces the cost to $0.016 per core hour, allowing Microsoft R Server on Azure HDInsight users to run distributed R analytics workloads at a significantly lower price.

In addition to the price reduction, Microsoft announced the general availability of Apache Kafka on Azure HDInsight and Azure Log Analytics integration. Microsoft also announced public preview integration with Power BI direct query that allows organisations to create dynamic reports based on data and metrics that are already in Interactive Query clusters in Azure BLOB store or Azure Data Lake Store.
